How to reset ECM & TCM in 2012 Impala?

I've searched and saw a few "this should work" or procedures for older Impalas, but I was wondering if anyone has a sure-fire way to reset the ECM and TCM in a 2012 Impala?

Will simply pulling the ECM and TCM fuses cause it to "forget" everything and return to stock values? Or do I need to actually disconnect the battery completely?

Thanks for any help you can offer this new Impala owner! :)

I recently purchased the car, which was previously a rental car. I would just like to reset everything back to stock values so that it's "clean" before "learning" how I drive (mainly the transmission values)... May not even make a difference, but I figured it can't hurt either...

But again, I'm not even sure if doing both of these items would truly reset things, which is why I asked the question in the first place (the two "options" I provided were just guesses) - I'm looking for a concrete answer as to how I can truly clear all "learned" values...

Thanks for the reply!

I think it's already "learned" but...

Pull the positive and negative cables off and touch them together for a minute that will drain all the juice in the whole system.

May sound crazy but it's helped me do resets when just pulling the cables off for an hour didn't help.

Honestly if the car was broken in hard it will probably last a lot longer than a car broken in easily. That's just my experience with numerous cars and motors.

Or get new tuned ECM/TCM's It will give the car better power, fuel economy and save your trans in the long run by not letting it slip so much like it's programmed to do from the factory. It will also give you the ability to "learn" both to your driving habits.

Hmm, now what else would I need to worry about if I completely drain the electrical system with the above method? Will it lock my radio? Will I need to reprogram my keys or anything like that? It's amazing how "involved" these newer cars are - it seems that a simple dead battery can cause all sorts of issues (not to mention the difficulty of replacing the physical battery itself!). I remember when a battery replacement was a 5 minute job and was the easiest thing to replace on a car! ;-)

Thanks for the replies - I truly appreciate the help...

By the way - I'm *very* interested in the Overkill tune, but I'm still under factory warranty for another 16k miles, so I really don't want to mess with anything that would void my warranty... It's soooo tempting though! I've even considered getting an "extra" ECM to keep around if I need to go back to the dealer. Still thinking about that, but I am going to try and just wait until the factory warranty has expired....

You'll have to reset your clock, that should be it.

To be honest i dont know how you do it, but sound like a good idea.. I know back in the day of the toyotas we would pull the ECU 2 fuse and leave the parking lights on at the track so it would reset the timing..

On the sububran there is a reset we done a few times but i cant remember how it was done, something with the fuse, then the turn signal or some crap, but both of those are old.. Now i just use hp tuners for a reset on the sububran...

If it work, just be read to hate the car, i bought mine new and hated the damn thing for about the first 500 miles.. it held gears when coating, rod in the wrong gear while in town driving etc etc etc.... was just not correct.. after about 500 miles it was fine, and my mileage went up a lot too.

I would think that if the fuse is pulled it would reset it. ive never looked is there is a trans ecu? or do just need to pull all the ecu fuse's.

also on the sububran when it would trip limp mode i would have to pull both ecu 1 and ecu 2, for it cancle out limp mode.

FYI - I finally disconnected my battery about a week ago and drained the power from the system completely (by connecting the positive and negative cables like recommended above) in order to "reset" the EMC and TCM. Since then, my car has been running and shifting better and better every day, so it definitely made a difference (unless 'm just getting more and more used to the car by coincidence).

Either way, I'm a happy man - thank you all very much for the help!

"Or get new tuned ECM/TCM's It will give the car better power, " would you kindly break this down for me? where would one get new tuned ECM/TCM where do they install and remove from ? My tranny has a weird thing on my 2012 where it suddenly jumps rpm's. Thinking this might help correct that? Thank you

Do a search for Overkill, lots of info.
That said, no tune in the world is going to address a hardware problem. If you need to get it fixed, fix it... then add the performance mods. ;) :)
