Back-up camera problems

Just installed a brand new Kenwood double-din stereo and aftermarket back-up camera. The camera power wires are hooked up to the reverse light wires (at my license plate frame reverse lights) and an additional wire is hooked up to the positive reverse light cable. The additional wire runs to the back of the headunit, supposedly to tell it when to switch to the camera.

Everything seems hooked up properly, yet when I shift into reverse, it doesn't show any back-up camera. It doesn't seem to be available through the source menus either.

Any ideas? I'm hoping not to have to pull the bumper back off to access the wiring, but I'm sure I'll have to.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, but I played around with some of the settings, and even after turning the "back-up camera override" to on, it still didn't work. I'm also thinking the camera might be faulty because when I'm in reverse, and I switch to AV in source 1 (theres only 2 AV ins on the back of the HU, one is the rear view camera, the other is empty and subsequently greyed out on the head unit) it says No Input Detected.

This radio is already pissing me off. I had the SWC working on my way home, but when I got home, they weren't working at all. And while the iPod comes up and shows that it's playing, no sound comes out, and the iPod doesn't charge while it's plugged in, like it did with the other headunit.

I'm sure all of that is fixable, but still annoying, considering it took me most of the day to get it all in (granted, I was taking my time, and I started putting it back together early so I would have it all buttoned up to go home after work)

The other thing I'll have to double-check is the polarity of the wires leading to the reverse lights. I'm pretty sure I have them hooked up properly, but I was basing which wires to connect to on memory (I'm pretty sure white was + and black was -, but it would be best to double check). That would make sense as to why the HU is not detecting it's in reverse, as well as why the camera isn't coming on.

I'll probably dig into it again next Saturday.

Yeah, probably you're best bet (tear into it again on Saturday when you're not in a hurry). I had a hard time getting my reverse camera working originally too - I was using one of those little red connectors to "tap" into my reverse light power wires and it just wasn't making contact because of how high gauge the reverse camera power wires were... I eventually found a way to test my power connection (as there is no "power" light on the reverse camera) and found that I wasn't getting power at the camera. Could be the same type of issue (or like you said, wiring is reversed).

I'm sure you'll get it figured out once you have more time to investigate. Just a PIA tearing everything apart again... Been there, done that! :)

Hope that the head-unit charges the iPod though - that's would be a deal breaker!

Looking forward to some pics once you get it all straightened out!

Yeah, I stripped and soldered, so it should definitely be getting good contact.

As for the ipod charging, there are definitely ways around that. They make a cable that takes a 12v input as well as the USB connector, so even if the headunit doesn't charge it, the 12v connector will.

I also had issues when I originally aired my camera. First issue was when going into reverse nothing would pop up. Found out there was a setting that I need to turn on the rear view camera option. Next no image was showing. Found out I had the AV cable plugged into the wrong input. Next when I'm any fear but reverse it would show. Found out there was a setting to go from battery or polarity so the input. First to test if the stereo is even getting triggered by the reverse wire remove it from where it is and hook it up to a 12 volt positive that you know is working. If it goes into reverse image then You know the trigger wire works. If not then double check your connections. Next I would reconnect and check the wiring for the camera positive and negative. My wires were small and the ground would disconnect and reconnect. One way to test the camera is to plug the AV cord into a TV or something to eliminate the image issue being from the stereo. You can get a different yellow video cord to test the image output from the camera too to eliminate the av cord being the issue. The male end of my AV cable had to be punched in as it was making a loose connection with the female end and wouldn't work. Also what model stereo is it? I'm going to look up the manual. Good luck man.

The model of the headunit is Kenwood DDX271. I've looked through the settings, and the only thing I saw in terms of turning on the rear view camera functionality was "R Cam Override" or something similar to that, which I turned on and made no difference. I am able to manually pull up the back-up camera on the screen, but all it shows is "No Signal" which means either the camera isn't getting power, or one of the components they gave me is no good (cable or camera). I'm going to double-check the polarity on the wires behind the bumper, since that seems to make the most sense as to where my problems are coming from, though I can't think of any reason why I would have hooked up white to negative and black to positive when doing my license plate frame reverse lights, unless I just mistakenly did it backwards, which is possible. All the wires are soldered, so no loose connections here. I'll tear into it again next weekend.

Sounds like my iPod issue is just with the cheap aftermarket cable I'm using. Gunna buy a new one and hopefully that fixes that.

Still baffled on my steering wheel controls, unless the wire connecting them to the stereo somehow came loose, which is very possible. Will open that up and solder that connection (only one I didn't solder since it may have needed a resistor, which it didn't end up needing)

Got this fixed over the weekend. Turns out the wires were hooked up backwards. Still have no clue why I used the white wire as the ground... But it all works now. Well, except for the steering wheel controls. Talked with Axxess about that. They see to think it's a problem with the steering wheel controls themselves, which I just don't buy. Still got some troubleshooting to go on that one, but I really don't feel like tearing into the dash AGAIN. That double-din barely fits.
