Hi,
I am a newbie here and I own a 2008 Impala LT 3.9 V6 Flex w/ 17" wheels. I'm having an issue with the new rear strut assemblies I had installed on the rear. My car is sitting lower than it used to after the install, did I buy the wrong ones ? I purchased them from Detroit Axle for 2008 Impala 17" wheels w/o electric/air assist, no police/taxi package. I really don't like them and want the rear of my vehicle to be supported like it was and the rear sit up like it used to. As you can see on the photos the front which still have the factory struts and springs sits higher than the rear now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Open trunk and lift carpet. Look for sticker with numbers on it. They are RPO numbers.

A couple of those numbers identify the specific suspension packages for your car.

The trick is which numbers.

I try but I'm not good at it. I have to type in every RPO on my sticker. There must be a better way.

A fresh thread was recently started, it's titled to be about RPO lists for these numbers.

I'm almost 100% positive the 2008 Impalas didn't have electric or air assist shocks (You mentioned this before editing your original post). rockauto.com doesn't even have an option for that. You may have purchased the wrong ones. Can you verify the ones you ordered were the ones you received, and the ones you ordered were the correct one?

rockauto.com is your source for parts and part numbers if you decide you want to go the Amazon route.

I had ordered suspension parts for my Trailblazer from Detroit Axle and have not been happy with the struts and shocks. They weren't strong enough, with the rears leaking almost a month into the installation. They refused to honor their 10 year warranty and I had to have Amazon step in.

I ordered part # 532471R 532471L
from Detroit Axle. They were described to be for 17" wheels without Police/Taxi package and without air/electric assist. Because I am 56/female I know nothing about automotive parts. I was just told what to order to later have installed and I ordered from DA on eBay. I used my VIN# so that they were supposed to be guaranteed fit. My mechanic picked them up once they arrived and installed them for me. I can only assume that what I ordered was what I received because they fit but left the rear body of the car much lower than the front. I've gone back n forth with DA this week and they have agreed to ship part # 172471R #172471L
to replace them at no cost to me. I can only hope that this will correct the issue but will need to confirm that once I receive them & before I spend more money to have them installed.
Do you know anything about this new part # they are supposed to be shipping to me and if this is the correct part ?

Your age and gender have no bearing on your ability to do some research and ensure you're getting the correct parts for you vehicle, regardless of your level of automotive knowledge.

I don't know what parts will fit your vehicle, nor would I. I don't own an Impala and haven's since 2021.

You can go directly to the Detroit Axle website and input your vehicle information to verify fitment and part numbers. Although it says "Page Not Found" when posted, it will take you right to the parts page for your vehicle. Here's the link:

You can go to rockauto.com and do the same and verify part number interchange. Here's the link:

Other than that, I'd recommend doing some research on the parts you need and the part numbers BEFORE ordering and installing everything.

rockauto is an invaluable tool for finding the parts you need, and can give you correct part numbers should you decide to order from Amazon or elsewhere.

Does your mechanic still have the old struts? I'd be curious to know if the new struts are actually the same size as the stock ones. iirc, GM offered 16", 17", and 18" wheel options and I believe only the 18" wheels required the upgraded suspension. It seems odd to me that these struts are for 17" wheels only so I wonder if they're a different overall length from the original struts, or maybe the springs are a different shape/strength and they're compressing more than the originals.
