I need help. I can't for the life of me get my car out of park no matter what i try. I put my foot completely on the brake pedal and try moving the shifter and absolutely nothing... The button on the shifter is stuck frozen and will not move. Im frustrated. 2009 impala LT 145K

Common issue - lots of posts on this problem on this forum, you may want to do a search.

Check to see if the brake lights are functional when you step on the brake pedal. If not, replace the brake light switch.

If the lights are working - you will have to remove the shifter knob and bezel (and I think the floor console too). There was a TSB regarding wiring that became damaged, and prevented the brake-interlock shift solenoid from operating, and allowing the driver to shift out of park. The solenoid assembly was mounted to the transmission floor shifter assembly.

The wiring TSB stated to re route the wiring, and repair any that pulled out of the connectors. I believe the wiring pulled out of the connectors when the shift lever was pulled further rearward than placing the lever in drive.

looks like you got some good advice as to where to look for the problem.

In the meantime, if you need to drive somewhere, you can override the shift lock. Watch this video:

Think you just need to remove the trim around the shifter to get at the override button. Shouldn't have to remove the shifter or anything else.

Thanks guys! I did the override with the switch under the shifter. My next move is to inspect the wiring for any damaged connections and try to reroute them so they're not under stress when the shifter is moved from park to drive. I also had the issue with my key getting stuck in the ignition and under that there's a solenoid switch that will get stuck in the "out" position.

I will check that today! Do you happen to have the fuse # and color? I also think i have a blown fuse for my windshield washer bottle. Its full and nothing comes out when i use the sprayers. I also ordered the wiring repair kit to fix the "not going out of park and key stuck in ignition" problem since they work together. I have the trim off around the shifter as well as the top steering column cover off to push in on the brass plunger to get my key out.

@Dygamac3@

Welcome.

May I ask if:

  • the battery is disconnected?
  • the car is on a hill and no parking brake?

Clarify:
"posh the manual button on solenoid still stuck" Do you mean the shifter button will not go in? This is common. But I want to be sure.

Thanks 😊

If battery has power and is connected, and if vehicle is on level ground, which I'm guessing is the case, then gently turn the key forward as if to start the motor. If it rotates forward then try to start motor. If motor starts then test shifter button to depress and shift. Remember the brake pedal interlock.

Notice the under-hood fuse box has a map imprinted inside cover. Locate the ignition fuse. Top-Right quadrant see ECM IGN 10A fuse. Pull it out. Inspect. If you have a meter then test it.

Tell us at what step the test fails, and if any dash icons or dash text error messages display.

Key will turn on, vehicle will start, brake pedal depressed and yes brake lights work, shifter button will not depress, pulled console pushed interlock silver button in shifter still does not release. Checked wiring to interlock solenoin looks fine, also checked fuses that may pertain also good. Only light on dash are abs and traction control needs serviced. Go to turn car off and will not turn off all the way to get key out of ignition. Thanks Mark
