I looked up a vin on a 1961 bubble and the owner swears it is an SS.. here is the pertinent vin#1 17 37 S
1961 1700 (6cylinder) 37 (bubble)
Is there anything I'm getting wrong? This is just sport coupe right not an S.S.

The '61 is the most controversial concerning the SS. Most SS's were either Dealer add-ons or Owner add-ons, which is that you could just buy the Emblems, Hub-Caps, etc from Chevrolet, to make it look like one.

Now, they did make "Real" SS's in '61, but only 453 of them. Besides the Emblems, etc there was also various Hi-Performance components added to the car.

With a rough guess of only about half of them left, there is probably only about 225 of Original, Real '61 SS's out there.

I didn't actually run any of your Numbers, but if you have an original 6-Cylinder car, that automatically eliminates any doubt, as all Real '61 SS cars were 348's.

By the way, just to add a little more info, a Real SS could also have had a 409 in it, but now you are talking extra rare, as they only made 142 409's in '61. Now that's just 142 in any '61. I don't believe there is any documentation from Chevrolet on how many 409 cars also got the SS option, but in my opinion, there weren't many.
