sounds like the drive cables from the trans might have got broken or got loose from the tail shaft under the truck also check behine the insterment panel it might have worn out (the cable ends)
Speedometer cable may have broken or needs lubrication, As far as shifting problem, its nothing to do with speedometer. Check tansmission fluid level .
Sounds like the speed sensor has gone out not allowing the trans to know when to shift and the speedo to lay down. The tach is not involved unless you have a wiring problem. Any critters in your area that might cozy up under the hood?
