What is the purposeof motor mounts and what do they do on a car, cadillac sedan de ville?

The motor mounts are two steel plates, with a piece of rubber bonded between them. One plate is bolted to the engine and the other to the frame. They hold the engine in place and the rubber keeps the vibrations of the engine from reaching your ears. The noise would be unbearable without that rubber.

They do fail eventually, letting the engine raise up, which will damage your radiator shroud, fan, hoses, and various other parts.

a motor mount is what holds the motor to the frame of the car and in the right place (not twisting when reving or anything)... they are designed to help dampen some of the vibrations from the running motor as well...
