Purchased new a new 2009 Impala at Hare Chevrolet in Noblesville Indiana..Always serviced at local Hare Chevrolet Dealership. Unit has 54,831 miles and yesterday experienced on garage floor some red fluids..Took to dealer and got the bad news of the power steering rack leaking fluid and in need of replacement plus the Transmission cooler lines leaking and also require replacing...Quote was in excess of $1700.00 but clever service writer suggested he went to parts manager and got a better price for the required parts and a new out the door price would be $1085.21...We said repair after being advised that GM had no recalls for the defect and would not assist with the cost of repairs. Per representative this happens often and I am so upset that Chevrolet cant make a 50k car that will not require major repairs before the car travels at least 75k miles... An additional irritation and concern is the fact the Service Writer at no time suggested that the price change was a result the dealership using a Re-manufactured Power Steering Rack in contrast to new parts expected...

Anyone else who owns a 2009 Chevrolet Impala having these oil/fluid leak problems?

When I first got my car in 06 while still under warranty one PS line blew off at the rack. Crappy crimp on ends was the problem especially in colder climates on a cold soak start up.
Since that time I have had the trans lines changed ( under warranty) for the same issue and the PS lines a second time.
Since the warranty ( extended ) lapsed one trans line has leaked again (same crappy crimped on aluminium ends ). I removed the line and "carefully" used my dremel to cut the crimped on aluminium collar off and replaced it with a mini clamp. I have done one PS line as well. No more leaking.

As for the rack leaking,,,,,,,,,,,,, I cannot answer to that sorry.

The lines are expensive to buy and there is really nothing wrong with them other than the way the collar is swedged/pressed on. The line is aluminium as well as the collar and over time and many temp changes they just get loose and no longer seal. The
"pressure" side is where most of the leaking comes from as the return line is not under the same pressure.
They are a bit of a "project" to dig out however.

It is almost never actually the transmission cooler lines themselves leaking, but usually the fittings. The fittings are about $5 if I recall, and are not hard to swap out. If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, you could always get a second opinion from a different shop. Seems like even at $1000 it is way to much for what they need to be fixing.

In my case, on all occasions, it was where there rubber hose was crimped onto the aluminum tubes.

The O ringed fittings that fit into the trans cooler were fine.

The last repair I did on it I even used the old O ring and so far it's been good. Just have to be careful with those cheapo little plastic things that hold them in place.

We had our car in for an alignment and don't recall the exact mileage off the top of my head but it was probably no more than 70,000. Had the service advisor call me telling me a front wheel bearing on our 2012 was out and that the price was $300 some odd dollars, not counting the labor. Wife and I were running some errands and I told him that was ridiculous that we would come and get it. I told him wheel bearings are not that much and he said they were so high because of the sensors. He then said they could use a quality non gm oem part for way less.

Funny how they can "save you money" on parts. Sometimes wonder if this is one of those games some of them play to come off as a hero, dunno?

We had one issue with the ps being low around 60,000. Put about a half quart in it and kept an eye on it. It has not been low again and the car has close to 120,000 on it now(i am knocking on wood now). lol
