Hi everyone!

So a couple of weeks ago I was driving my car and the RPMs shot up (in drive). I turned the car off, turned it back on and it worked for less than a mile. Now the car won't work at all in drive and will act as if it's in neutral. It can still reverse and go forward in 1st gear, but obviously that won't get me far. The fluid levels are right where they should be and I haven't had any issues before this so I'm a little confused. The car does have high miles (178,***). Not sure if this has ANYTHING to do with it, but my fans for the heat/ac won't work anymore either. I replaced the blower motor this winter so I wouldn't think anything should be wrong with that.

I'm honestly just curious if there's anything I can do to fix it/try to, if it's worth rebuilding, should I buy a brand new transmission, or what? I don't want to buy a new (used) car, because even just getting a brand new transmission would be cheaper in the end (I think).

There are no engine lights or other lights on besides the TPMS sensors (the front 2 are dead).​

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I'm dumb and forgot some vital information. It's a 2007 Chevy Impala LT 3.5L V6

Might help to post the year model and which engine.

Does it slip at all in first or reverse? Might just be something simple.

If it were me, I would probably be calling around local transmission shops to see if any offer free estimates and see about getting estimates from a couple different shops.

What year is your Impala?

From what you describe, it sounds like you most likely need a trans rebuilt or replacement... The 4-speed trans in the 2006-2011 Implas is not the most durable and is known to fail prematurely. If you got 178k miles out of it, then you are way ahead of the game already! :)

But we need to know what car you have (what year, mainly)...

I'm so sorry!! I had a major brain fart and I guess I forgot to add that D:

The engine is a 3.5L V6, it's a 2007 Impala.

I planned on calling one later today, but I don't have the funds to have it repaired atm so I'm not sure if they'd appreciate me calling.

I haven't noticed any slippage while in reverse

I'm sorry if this is considered a "bump" and not allowed. I ended up calling the transmission shop in town and they were quoting $2,250 + tax. As much as I love this car, with the other issues it has I really don't think it's worth it to even get if fixed. Thank you for the help you two! :)

Another less expensive option is to get a used trans from a junkyard - they are *much* less expensive and generally come with a warranty. Something to consider if the rest of the car is still in good shape.

i had my trans on my 2010 3.5 rebuilt this spring. i've put 120k on the car and not all of those miles were exactly nice. i don't exactly baby the car. i was quoted about 1600 from a napa shop i use/trust. maybe shop around on the trans shops in your area until you find another one that is reputable with a better price. if you know the condition of the car and want to drive it for a lot longer, the trans might be cheaper than a new payment in the long run. in my case i expect to get 250k out of the car, especially now that i've addressed the trans at about 164k miles.

i will note i was getting the slip bump off and on for about a year before i took it in and the shop could catch it in the act. mine was identified as the clutches had begun to fail badly by that point.
