05 implala ls 3.8L This only happens every now and then. Usually in the first 0-15 minutes of driving. When starting to take off it act's like it's low on tranny fluid. Rpms ups then bangs in to gear. It does this occasionally and in the first 0-10 Miles. Then it works just fine. Been in the shop no codes and off course it did not do it. Fluid is nice and clean and a new filter. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I'm thinking an experienced transmission mechanic should be able to diagnose it just from your description. That said, finding one that doesn't want to do a complete rebuild on it can be difficult.

OTOH, if they have to pull the tranny for any repair, it makes sense to install a rebuild kit while they're at it, especially when it's 12 years old.

Really not looking to take it to a shop. It has 152000 miles on it. I bought it with 128000 miles on it a year ago. It had this issue then I just did not know it until a month or so after buying it. Along with a many other issues. I fixed some and the shop fixed some. It has been to a reputable shop for the tranny issue. The tranny worked just fine for them with no codes. It might do it 3 times a month and it might not do it at all.

Thought it would be a nice replacement to the 99 buick Regal my kid now drives. It had no classic signs of neglect very nice looking and very clean car with all the service records from 30000 miles. The owner had them.

Given the history of that transmission time to start looking for another transmission or ride.
152,000 isn't so bad after all, mine went out at 78,000 on 2011 impala.

i'm in the same boat, i've got 150k on my car, solenoid in the transmission giving a transmission slip very ocassionally. needs new struts (think it still has the originals and was riding decent until recently), now i need roof trim that broke last night, water pump last summer/new belt. trans service being done next week. new headlights are getting moisture in them and i'm on the second pair but the same manufacturer (fortunately i was able to warranty them for the second pair in the first month)they all need work occasionally just sucks when it hits all within a year. that motor should be good for 250k.

i had a 95 park avenue that i only sold at 189k because the rockers were rotted out. trans was just recently starting to feel a little soft.

my mom's 05 rendezvous with the 3.4 had a very bad trans slip, come to find out it was the solenoid and was only a 400 dollar fix. been golden for over a year after it now. but again i understand its difficult to get it fixed when it won't duplicate for the shop.

it's up to you, if the car seems solid, fix it and you're still not paying a giant car payment if you even have one. just my two cents.

Sounds like the pressure control solenoid issue that the 8th gen also have. I would look into swapping that. I think it is still a decent amount of work cause you need to lower the sub frame to get at the access panel.

Agree with the others. The PCS in the trans and it's not the easiest job to do. A guy does it locally for me for $500 which is a decent price. I had the same issues you are describing and that's what it was, running strong for almost 50,000M so far!
These transmissions are good if they're taken care of. My fam has a 2005 venture that has 311,000 miles on original trans and motor, although the trans solenoids had to be done twice.

The car shifts fine though all the gears its just that take off. I also feel that temperature affects it as well. I called one tranny shop just over the phone his thought was mechanical failure on pcs. Said they also add a shift kit and a few other things when they do one. They wanted just over 900 to do it. Going to call another tranny shop tomorrow.

Would that transgo shift kit fix it if I was to install it??

Here is my repair list 1 month after buying, 4 quick struts, alignment, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, upper motor mounts, motor mount bracket, water pump, idler pulley, tranny pan gasket and filter, tranny lines, front rotors, spark plugs, fuel filter, tires, belt, sent gauge cluster in to get repaired, cleaned the throttle body, and I am sure there are a few more things I am forgetting. Now Don't get me wrong I knew it was going to need some of these things but not all. I get its called maintenance and not an honest seller. I guess it is what it is. I also guess I need to decide if I want to fix it or just walk away.

here are my current issues.
power steering pump leaking
rear sway bar links
lights on heater control panel going out
This tranny problem
possibly oil pan is leaking again

as long as you're not losing too much oil too fast, i'd just keep filling it for now. i personally have a rear main at the tune of 650 to repair....the oil is cheaper :p lol. but f or a 3800 an oil pan gasket should be pretty cheap. just have them change it when they're doing a normal oil change anyways, that way you're not wasting money on a needless oil change.

lights on the control panel aren't a major issue, think the whole heater control panel dual climate zone for a 2010 is 20 dollars.

900 on the transmission seems like a good price if they're a reputable place. i hope when mine is due i can find one that cheap, i was fearing 2k on the repair...but i've never called to inquire on pricing yet as i'm not near that point.

i just looked up the prices on rock auto for the sway bar link, if i looked up the right part it's 16 bucks for the most expensive ones out there (Moog). throw in a 4 wheel alignment so you track straight and don't wear the tires during this same install (i just paid 80 at the dealer for the wifes 2011 cruze last week on the alignment). once or twice a year when i have my car in the shop for something (i say that as it's been catching up to me this past year for repairs, all hitting at once) i have them inspect the suspension bushings for wear while it's on the lift.

power steering pump remanned ac delco is 61, it's actually cheaper to get one that has the resevoir already on it, haha. depending on how bad it's leaking, live with it and replace it once the weather gets nicer perhaps.

honestly it's up to you, but at this point it sounds like you're getting close to catching up and you still don't have a payment plan. those motors are good for 250k or more with just oil changes and plenum gaskets if you're a series 2. pick the urgent things first and go for the other stuff a little later to kind of even out the paying for stuff.

the shop i go through doesn't let you buy your own parts and bring them in....which is annoying but i've had a good experience with him (napa shop).

just my 2 cents.

On repair pal it estimates a oil pan reseal (which I assume is a gasket) at $412-565.
I have done it on my 3800, and it was a pain. There's one bracket that is almost impossible to get off. Especially when you put it back together and have no oil pressure on startup.
If it's not dripping on the ground.....a lot easier to do when the engine is out too.

wow, rock auto has the gasket for only 17-55 dollars depending on what you want to buy. like you said the labor must be the killer on that one...i've lived with leaky oil pan gaskets on a few vehicles. in my garage i keep a large piece of cardboard and try to park over it to keep any drips from hitting the pavement.

Well we see next week if the shop can figure out the tranny problem. They are going to check it out for free and give me a loaner vehicle.
As far as The other issues with yeah I can fix them myself if I want to lay outside on the concrete and that's probably what I will do. My garage is just to small. That's not really my issue with this car. For what I have invested in the car already (in a year) and what it might take to fix the tranny I could of had a newer car with less miles.

Oh the oil pan gasket was just over 500 to have done.

update car was at he shop for 3 days and they could only get to do it once. I think it is temp related. I notice it more when it is 20-35 degrees out. The tranny tech did not catch the information he wanted on there scan tool. He thought it was taking off in 2nd gear then banging down into 1st gear. Which could be possible. Thinking about just shifting it manually from now on.

Well just an update I know its been awhile.

Finally got tried of that tranny issue. Took it to a very well know tranny shop in my area. The problem is still interment. It acted up a few times for him. He believes the input piston is worn. His suggestion is a basic rebuild. Which replace clutches, some o ring, solenoids, input piston, ect. Still had no codes. Car has 163000 now going to cost me around 1850.
