So I'm down in Florida picking up a 2002 impala with 40,000 on it. I have no way to read codes. The traction control is off and the ABS light is on. When you start the car it says service traction control system.

Can anyone make an educated guess for me?

Thanks
Ken

could be:
the wiring harness
bad sensor (requires wheel hub replacement. since the sensor is not a replaceable part)

Bad sensor is a very common issue replacement is $80 to $150 depending on where you go.

Likely a bad sensor as mentioned. The traction control and abs are pretty much one in the same and use the same sensors to do their business.

It's completely safe to drive without the TCS or ABS.

My car has the same lights on. I took it to pep boys and they said I should take it to the dealer. They couldn't pinpoint the exact cause but scanned the codes and came up with:

c1216 ebcm, c1218 abs pump motor, c1221 If wheel speed sensor, c1222rf wheel speed sensor, c1226 rf wheel speed sensor, c1233 rf wheel speed sensor, c1245 low tire pressure....basically they said it may be a wiring issue or possible bad ebcm.

I honestly haven't fixed it's been about 5 months. It drives fine. The lights are annoying though.

None of that maybe the issue have you tried filling up the tires? and reseting it?

Assuming you still have the useful factory radio installed

1. Turn Ignition on and turn radio off Very important not to start the engine or this will not work.
2. Press and hold DISPLAY on the radio until SETTINGS is displayed.
3. Use SEEK , scroll until TIRE MON appears
4. Press Prev or Next till RESET is displayed.
5. Press SEEK button.
6 Exit

Traction control is just electronic controlled differential .

off is not locked( depending on manufacture setting)
on limited slip variable electronic controlled.

ABS prevents the breaks from locking up when you press them hard. This helps the car stop faster.

both traction control & ABS use the sensor(s).

Thanks. I can change hubs. If I use the scan tool when I get home will it tell me which hub?

Yes it will. If it does not you could just search the code on the internet.

Pretty much the same thing as 05LS And, yeah the lights and bells are annoying..anyway to override that?

I also had this same problem. If the pump and ebcm codes show up your ignition switch is likely at fault. I just hope the faulty ignition switch didn't take out your ebcm (brake control module) and abs pump. It did on mine. Common problem. When an ignition switch starts to fail it send spikes of voltage to various components and can burn them up. I would get it fixed ASAP before it creates big problems like I had.

To be honest it sounds like you guys are already too late and your ebcm is done for.

A local dealer replaced my EBCM, Ignition switch, and cylinder for a wopping $1,250. It's not something you can do yourself. You could but the ebcm is $500-700 alone, ignition switch and cylinder is around $100, along with a "dealer only" abs brake setup of about $100 or so. You can only bleed the abs system of brake fluid with a tech 2 scanner.

Edit: If you have abs sensor codes along WITH the abs pump and ebcm do NOT just go and replace hubs. The fault is likely at the ebcm, pump, or ignition switch. You WILL be replacing the wrong parts and wasting money. When an EBCM fails and throws codes, so will your abs sensors.

Read codes when I came home today and the only code I got was 0420 for the cat/02 sensor. I assume that I need to go somewhere and have codes read now for the traction and ABS. I'll try my local autozone first I guess. I did the scan with the car not running and the ign on. Any other suggestions to pull codes?

^^ Check wires and connector first.

Just got back from Autozone, DS front hub sensor
It may be the wire to the wheel that is broken as the abs reader points you in the general direction of a problem.
If you want and have ohm meter pull the wire harnness out and bench test both wires , the test the hub for a reading before you change the hub.
here is a link that has more infromation. http://www.impalaforums.com/chevy-i...o-test-wheel-sensor-to-see-if-its-faulty.html

The front abs harness's are manufacture defect. They wrapped the wires with tape which, ends up binding and ripping the wires. Test voltage with key on to each harness while wiggling the harness. Supply should be 5v DC. Then test the resistance and output on each sensor.
