Anybody actually use this stuff? I normally wouldn't even look at it, but burning 1 quart of oil a week and fouling my plugs and plugging my cat, etc... I know it is likely to build up in oil passages as well as whatever it claims to do, but at this point, could it really do any harm? I really just need to squeeze some more miles out of it before I can afford the time or the money to fix it right.

I had a choice between that and something called z-max or duralube. I had a old car that was tired and using oil so i figured I would try all 3 in one year and see what happened. I read all the hype and just tried those 3 anyway.

Only one that actually did anything was z-max. I did not have the car for long after that last year I tried the stuff so I cant tell you about anything long term. But restore did nothing that I could notice.

What kind of results did you get? I just want it to stop burning oil.

it acted as some sort of sealer type additive. Which made for less oil loss and slightly better fuel mileage. Again its an additive, it will not do much but if your to that point, anything is better than nothing as long as you think it over. I am not telling you to use it or buy that, just giving you a little feedback on what I noticed on my junker years ago.

Damn, they should really use that in their marketing! My case is a little different than most though, since I recently did a top end rebuild. At least I hope that makes a difference...

If your motor uses that much oil then don't bother trying any type of snake oil additive. On another web-site Z-MAZ is said to be nothing more than a fake. It's just mineral oil. Your better off considering a valve job.

The only oil "additive" worthwile is www.auto-rx.com restore is worthless, rislone is, and zmax is.
I know you and I have somewhat clashed on this, but I use Rislone as part of my preventive maintenance. I have had cars where I did not use it, and saw a noticeable buildup of sludge and crap under my valve covers. When I do use it regularly, the sludge does not appear anywhere as fast or as bad.

My old man out-law swears by it and is much older than I am. He's been a gearhead far longer than I and likely many people here. (he's turning 60 this fall)

I know you like numbers and hard data, (NTTAWWT) but I like recommendations of people who know more than I do. Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: I have used Restore before. I used it on my '79 Monte (before I knew better) because I was getting a wee little bit of blowby. It did cure the blowby, but it also plugged up the oil drain holes in the heads. If you need a temporary cheap fix, go for it, but still start saving up for an upper engine rebuild.

Valve job was already done, I believe its rings, which is why I was considering that treatment. Basically, if I can stop burning as much oil and get some compression back I will be happy. At least until I can afford to either rebuild or replace the engine.

Rislone does work, but it doesn't work to the extent of it's claims or for it's price. Data shows what's in the stuff, and easily makes a decision on whether or not its going to work. Kind of like a fuel injector cleaner. There are a few chemicals that work wonders for cleaning fuel system. There's no point to buy brand C fuel injector cleaner if it doesn't include those chemicals or those chemicals in a large percentage. Then claiming that brand C cleaner worked would be BS. One example would be Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Virgin Analysis shows it has no additives. No anti-foaming agents either. All it does is thicken your oil past what it needs to be. Yet some people swear by it.

Some engines are known sludgers. driving habits don't help situations.

If you want experience. I used to put a quart of rislone in my 89 caprice with 190K miles at the time of ownership (sold it with 226K) at the recommendation of my dad who also thinks Bahr-Dal(sp) works great too. I think afer a year of ownership I stopped using it. When I changed the valve cover gaskets, you wouldn't believe all the caked up sludge I found in the heads. Rislone certainly didn't clean anything up.

Speaking of which, I'd like some recommendations on fuel injector cleaners / carb cleaners. I swear I could go thru a whole can of carb cleaner on my '91 once a month and still get a ton of varnishy residue and crap streaming off. And by the way in the past 2 months I've gone thru literally 3 cans of gumout, and still get lots of residue coming off. What am I doing wrong?

And I hear some local garages wanting to shoot alcohol into my vacuum lines to "clean them out". I've seen them do this to other cars and it just creates a TON of white exhaust. That can't be good. Or can it? Is it necessary to clean vacuum lines?

In general vacuum lines do not need to be cleaned out. I have never found a carbon plugged vacuum line yet.

Now there is a combustion chamber cleaner that does get pulled into the vacuum lines and it is supposed to clean the carbon off the inside of the chamber and makes a lot of white smoke. I have tried it in my van, not sure if it really helped or not. I used it when I replaced the timing chain a month ago.

So... I don't have any sludge, never have. What I do have is oil burning, low power, and shitty mileage. That was the reason I was looking at restore, since it claims to fill in scratches and what-nots in the cylinder walls. My biggest concern is what that means it will do to other parts.

So basically, the only fix is either a rebuild or a new motor. That's what I needed to figure out.

Hang on I have to change my underwear... Okay, yeah that would be nice. Unfortunately a bottle of crap is about as far as my budget will take me right now. My goal is to eventually swap the engine and tranny as a unit to something far more modern, but that would cost me as much as a new car that I can't afford either...

Do a compression check and you may find your answer to the oil burning. Low compression in one or two cylinders indicates a tear down.
Compression check cheapest and most reliable source of info.

Check with your local jobber outlet, they often have tool rental plans that may not cost you for this diagnostic process.
