Hello everyone.

My wife has a 2011 Impala LS. A year or so ago I surprised her with some LTZ wheels and installed them for her. I instantly realized I had clearance issues in the rear with the strut plate. For the meantime, I uhh...persuaded some clearance but the tires still rubbed some until they made their own clearance.

I have read some other threads on this but never really answered my questions.

I see I need FE3 strut assemblies for the rear. Anybody have a specific assembly they recommend? I am confused on FE3 vs police and taxi and rock auto does a poor job distinguishing what is what. Is the FE3 and police and taxi the same? I would prefer to not raise the rear end much because the wife won't be too happy. From what I have read, the police and taxi will raise the rear end the most but I can't find the true difference between the 2.

I am just confused and have no idea what to buy. She needs new tires and I want to get the clearance issue resolved before I ruin another set.

Another great thread on the subject is here.

On RockAutos site the AC Delco 506282 is for the FE3 rear suspension.

The simple solution is to reference the SS from '06-'09.

Thanks guys. All a bit confusing to me.

Reminds me of the time I bought U-Joints for my truck and they put 2 different diameter shafts (difference of like 0.060") in the same year of truck so good luck finding out which ones you need until you realize they are wrong.

In response to your post, I looked on gmpartsdirect.com to see what strut part numbers were listed there. With the manufacturer's part number, you can cross to an after market part with a little more confidence.

I looked under 2011 Impala LS and also 2011 Impala LTZ. Both those searches return the same two parts:

88965468 Strut, IMPALA, W/ O POLICE PACKAGE; W/ O SPORT SUSPENSION
88965469 Strut, IMPALA, W/ O POLICE PACKAGE; W/ SPORT SUSPENSION

That's as far as I got. When I see "sport suspension", I think "stiffer strut" but not necessarily "taller". I suppose FE3 means sport suspension, but not sure.

Besides wondering if you have the correct struts, are the LTZ wheels limited to Impalas only? Or could they be from a different model that might have different offset? (I doubt it, but those are the sort of variables that can bite us.)

You might go to the parts counter at your dealer and see if they can give you a part number for the strut for an LTZ. I think they can sometimes access better info on their computers.

One last thought. Are you sure you have the correct tires mounted on the wheels? Maybe the tire is too tall rather than the strut being too short?

Stock tire sizes:

LS= 16" or 17"
LT= 17"
LTZ= 18"
Right, those are the wheel sizes. But I'm speaking of the overall height of the tires - that's what could cause them to rub if they're of a different height or tread width than the LS tires.

I looked on Discount Tire's website. They list three different tires for the 2011 Impala, as shown below. Then I looked on tiresize.com to get the overall heights. (The listed widths also come from that site.)


2011 LTZ:
235/50-R18 27.3" H , 9.3" W

2011 LS:
225/55-R17 26.7" H , 8.9" W
or
225/60 R16 26.6" H , 8.9" W


As you can see, the listed LTZ tire is 0.6 to 0.7 inches taller than the LS tires, which brings the tread 0.3-0.35 inches closer to the bottom of the strut plate on your car.

According to the tire size site, if you went to a 225/50-R18, it would get you back to 26.9"H and 8.9"W. That's still 0.2" taller - a tenth inch closer to the strut plate - but some more digging around with the tool might get you a better number.

I can't guarantee you this will fix your rubbing problem, but it's worth thinking about.
