Powerless

Some instant cereal was poured into the gas filler tube on my 2002 impala. I cleaned it out best I could. It was caked all the way to the tank. A new fuel filter was put in. Now the Impala won't get any power. The fastest it will go is about 35mph. Any insight or how to fix will be greatly appreciated.

So with changing the filter guessing the tank was dropped? Have you checked fuel pressure? I am not familiar with whether your model has a changeable filter outside the tank or not. May have to drop the tank and check, also possible the lines could be partially clogged.

On the 2002, the fuel filter is on the frame rail under the passenger compartment.

I'm guessing enough cereal got in the tank to partially clog the fuel pickup in the tank.

That said, the 2002 has a fuel pump accessible via the rear seat/trunk area. So, if necessary, it may be possible to clean things up without dropping the tank, assuming the lines between the tank and filler opening are OK.

If the fuel pressure test fails, I would want to remove the pump and inspect carefully inside the tank for more debris floating around. With a boroscope or other camera, look around inside the tank, and focus on the lines from the filler neck to be sure they're OK.

With a cleaned up or new fuel pump in place, I would also change the fuel filter again.
