I have a 2012 LT fleet with 156,000 miles - mostly highway. I use Mag 1 Dexos oil since I bought the Impala with 22,000 miles and change when the oil life is less than 20% (about 7000 miles - mostly highway). On a recent rip I threw a P0014 code twice. I cleared the code and it has not come back. P0014 is bank 1 exhaust camshaft over advanced. I have searched and decided I want to pull out the exhaust Camshaft Actuator Solenoid Valve and look to see if the screens are plugged. I read the http://alldatadiy.com/ procedure for removing the bank 1 exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid

  • remove the wire connector
  • remove the bolt
  • remove the camshaft actuator solenoid
Looking under the hood, it does not look there is enough room to pull out the solenoid (it is almost 6" long). there does not seem to be enough space between the head and the shock tower.

How do you remove the exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid?

Good question. Can you upload some images showing where it is and what it looks like? Then I'll check on mine to see if I can find a way.
Also note that timing chains on these vehicles can go bad, so that could be causing this code as well.

So I just took a look at mine. If bank one is the one facing the rear of the car, and that part is about 6 inches long. There's no way you can replace that without either removing the engine or finding a way to tilt it pretty severely... If it's the front bank, it'll be cake.

On a side note, I noticed some oil-looking substance about covering part of my engine about 8 inches lower than the cam position solenoids, was wondering if you saw something similar on your's? I'll probably take pictures and create a new thread for that issue sometime later this weekend.

Yes, it is the bank closest to the firewall. The shock tower does reduce the clearance. I measured distance from the face of head to the shock tower to be about 4"

I attached a couple of pictures - one showing the rough space and second showing the solenoid.

Tomorrow, if the weather is OK, I will try to pull it as far to the shock tower as possible and then move toward the front of the car, it *might* just come out. The Amazon detail shows the solenoid as 5.9" in length.

It has been many weeks but the P0014 code came back yesterday. I now have 162,000 miles on my Impala.

I changed the right(rear) exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid valve this afternoon. The hardest part was getting the wire connector off the solenoid. I practiced on the front intake solenoid as it very accessible. Once I was able to remove its connector, then I moved to the rear exhaust solenoid.

I found that as I pulled rear exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid out, I had to rotate the wire connector and tip the solenoid until I had enough clearance to remove it. The replacement went in doing the reverse.

The access leave much to be desired but it is very doable. You don't have to remove anything else to gain access. I found a mirror helped line up the replacement so I could install the bolt.

I hope this fixes my P0014 code.

I'm curious - how is your 2012 running at that many miles (besides this particular issue)? People are always talking about how a catch can is needed on these engines, I'm really curious to get reports from folks with high mileage that don't have catch cans installed (I still say that they are not necessary). Just curious since you have a lot of miles...

Hi folks! I have the same issue(p0014) but a different yr(2013) and question. I found no o ring and seemingly no grease where the vvt solenoid seals on the engine. I believe no oring is cool(none with new part)but **do I need to oil the intakes and put lithium grease where it seals?**
It doesn't look snug enough on its own to prevent a future oil leak but I'm also worried the grease could degrade and seep into the oil and cause a problem.
Other than this its been an extremely easy replacement.
