Probably lots of discussion but wondering what everyone is using re: oil for 2011 and up with Dexos rating. I do my own now and use PF 63 AC filters. I have used Pennzoil conventional for years in my 02 but I"m not sure about running it it my 2012 ? :dizzy:

I did read where if GM can prove it was a lubrication failure using oil without the Dexos 1 rating they could refuse warranty.

From the 2011 impala owner's manual under Vehicle Care pages 10-9

Selecting the Right Engine Oil

Selecting the right engine oil

depends on both the proper oil

specification and viscosity grade:

Specification

Use and ask for engine oils with

the dexos

certification mark.

Oils meeting the requirements of

the vehicle should have the dexos

certification mark on the container.

This certification mark indicates that

the oil has been approved to the

dexos specification.

This vehicle was filled at the factory

with dexos

approved engine oil.

Notice:

Use only engine oil

that is approved to the dexos

specification or an equivalent

engine oil of the appropriate

viscosity grade. Engine

oils approved to the dexos

specification will show the

dexos symbol on the container.

Failure to use the recommended

engine oil or equivalent can

result in engine damage not

covered by the vehicle warranty.

If you are unsure whether the

oil is approved to the dexos

specification, ask your service

provider.

Use of Substitute Engine Oils if

dexos is unavailable: In the event

that dexos

approved engine oil is

not available at an oil change or

for maintaining proper oil level,

you may use substitute engine oil

displaying the API Starburst symbol

and of SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade.

That only applies to direct injection engines, which so far only the 2012 and 2013 have. Any previous model impala can use any conventional 5-30. '12 and up require Dexos rated oil.

Its ok, 5 second rule!

The difference as I see it, is that the transmissions may not have changed, but they have been plagued with problems, so I can accept a new fluid requirement standard. But the engines have never had a problem, so I can see no justification for a new oil standard requirement for the same engine.

Just an fyi, I use Valvoline Durablend in my 2001 monte carlo and 2007 Impala. It meets or exceeds the 'dexos' standards of GM but it doesn't say that on the bottle. I found the information on their website, they will not pay the licensing fee GM charges to allow them to use the dexos name.

When I got the 2007 I called GM and they said since Valvoline Durablend was tested using GM approved methods it would not have any impact on the warranty.
