That's an interesting setup you have there. I like the iPad mini in the dash. I never had the courage to do that

Looks good man! I thought about putting my ipad mini in the dash of mine, but same as DLW, never had the balls to do it. Just did a regular double-din unit instead lol.

Nice job - looks great!

I have considered an Android head-unit previously, but the more that I thought about it, I couldn't really come up with any good reasons WHY I wanted it! I noticed that you still needed to have a "regular" head-unit anyway, so what do you actually use the iPad mini for? I just can't imagine checking email or surfing the web in the car... Just wondering what practical uses a tablet has in a vehicle (over a double-din, touchscreen head-unit, for example). Still trying to convince myself what I need one! :)

There are a few reasons I can think of:

1) It will store your music on the device, organized into your libraries (easier to find the music than over the headunit iPod interface, at least on my double din)

2) Navigation and internet connection (for things like looking up addresses or food/gas around you, etc) which can mostly be had on a double din headunit, though the iPad has more available through being able to access the internet directly (through 3g though, which does cost $$)

3) Certain apps that you may want to use while driving (can't get torque on iPad, but there are other OBD apps out there that aren't as good, and I'm sure there are other apps that people would like to use too)

4) Bigger screen makes navigating menus easier, and better for watching videos/navigation screens (not to mention it just looks cooler)

5) Just to be different and say you did :eek:k3:

Torque Pro is definitely one that would be cool... The others not so much (at least not for me). The iPod interface on my Rosen is actually pretty good (can view by Artist/Album/Genre/Playlist, etc) and the Navigation app (iGo MyWay) actually has TONs of POIs and gets frequent updates (and actually has a better interface than Google Maps, for example). Granted, not as "real time" as the internet, but not "outdated" either.

I still can't convince myself that it's worth it for me - especially because I'd lose my XM Tuner interface. Cell coverage where i live isn't the greatest, so XM-over-the-internet just isn't reliable enough and it's also nice have "on device" maps for the same reason (although you can get on-device navigation apps for iPad/Android too).

I think you hit the nail on the head - it's mainly a "that's cool" type of thing. I guess it's worth it for some - just not for me. As much as I like Android, Torque Pro just isn't enough of a reason to go to an Android-based head-unit. If they had one that supported an XM tuner, I may consider it though (not sure I understand why none of the Android units have that feature, but they don't)...
