digit # 7 of the VIN will tell you. 1234567
That is the engine code, look at it and
ask any part store clerk to look up an
oil filter for each vehicle, each one will
have a different digit. the difference will tell you
which one is which.

The 96 Caprice could either have a 5.7 LT1 or a 4.3 L99. They are both V8s and look virtually identical on the outside. Easy way to tell is to check the VIN. If it has a LT1, the 8th digit will be a P(Example: 1G4BN52PXXXXXXXX) If it has the 4.3 V8 it will have a W for the 8th digit. Also LT1 cars have factory dual exhaust, whereas the L99 cars only have single exhuast on the passenger side. Your 93 has a TBI L05 engine if it has a 5.7 liter (which is a first generation small block) The LT1 is a Generation II...

LT1 = P
L99 =W

Another good visual (not always accurate) is the dual exhaust. Just look for 2 pipes, then check the VIN. Also, under hood sticker on the radiator assembly should say 5.7 Liter.

From a glance, they look pretty much the same, but one is a lot meaner....
