...out of the left valve cover.? The fuel pump is working and fuel pressure is adequate. It also has a new battery, but I crank the engine and it will not start. Sometimes it seems like it will start but it doesn't and that is when I noticed the smoke coming from the left valve cover. There may be a little coolant leaking into the oil, but would this cause is not to start?

Sounds like a blown head gasket. If there is coolant leaking into your oil, it won't start. It's like sticking your spark plugs in water and trying to get them to fire. Impossible. Take your plugs out in cylinder 1 & 2 and see if they are wet. Most likely, it's a blown head and it's not going to crank until it's overhauled.
