how important is scanning after an accident?

i gently bumped LF of the car last week in ice storm. need headlight assembly and all the front fiberglass stuff/grill for sure. obviously they gotta take it off after the estimate is done to see if theres more underneath

but the body shop says state farm resists not only paying for OEM parts but that they dont pay for scanning before and after the repair and he charges 150 for that service.

i have no visible codes, just that when i use left signal i get an error of course because its broken.

i had thought there was a law about OEM but apparently not per page 10 here

https://www.insurance.pa.gov/Coverage/Documents/Auto/AutomobileInsuranceGuide-WEB.pdf

so how important are OEM and doing a scan. he gave me a GM printout of what GM says should be done but says the insurance really wont care. given the nature of the parts, the fit or they dont, right? i'm assuming the little bow tie will be in the assembly just as before etc. absent any mechanical issues i dont know how much fuss about OEM i can raise plus i do want it back ASAP.

Many states now allow aftermarket crash parts, at the insurance company’s direction. This is a result of the insurance companies lobbying the politicians, and encouraging them to pass laws that are favorable to them.

SOME insurance companies have riders to ensure OEM parts are used. This is usually at additional cost to the insured.

I’m not sure what you mean by scanning - other than scanning the system for stored codes? After the repair, you could have an auto parts store scan the car for codes.

OEM parts are your decision - but some parts many not be available in aftermarket so the company my be forced to use OEM. You have a 2LTZ, so you have HID headlamps. I’m not sure if there is an aftermarket part for this, so they may use GM.

Good luck.

Might be inclined to check with another body shop, $150 to scan for codes? Ummmm yeah right. No doubt insurance co's won't pay for that. A parts store does it for free, and you could buy a pretty nice scanner that would check and clear the codes for you for far less.

Far as aftermarket parts and genuine gm parts, good luck. If you did not have a rider or clause for it, chances are your insurance will not pay for genuine parts.
I am afraid that state farm is one of the biggest users of overseas parts. And most will use used parts after 2 years of manufacture.

FYI if they are going to charge that kind of money. You can get a scanner from harbor freight with SRS, ABS, and pretty much engine related codes for $179.00 plus tax when on sale. I have bought one and only had it for 60 days and the kid has used it twice. He said it's really good compared to the cheaper units with self powered, clears all codes and has a diagnostic chart for so called repairs.

gave me gm bumper cover and my guy got a price match for the headlight. they said grill is available but the appraiser never called the yard and they didnt even have one so im sure ill get OEM. will rip apart the car by end of this week to see if other damage. i have an autoxray 7000 which was great for my 95SS but they stopped updating it.sigh. it was invaluable when i swapped out the engine. does the harbor one linked to above include cables for different cars or at least domestic?
Would do more research on scanners, and shy away from the harbor freight models. Some things harbor freight is ok on, electronics imo are not one of them, and often times they compare price points of high end tools to their stuff that is NOT of comparable quality and some of the stuff they sell is even priced higher than comparable quality tools. Most of their stuff imo is very cheaply made chinese junk.

While I was disappointed in innova pulling the software for non pro shop users for the scanner I have, it was less than the price above and is a quality product that does srs and abs. I know there are others out there around 100 bucks that will do all you need.

The ALDL Connector is the same on all cars both forign and domestic. It was standardized as of 1996 with OBD2.
