recently the plastic elbow was cracked and leaking coolant, i replaced it and now it seems to be running at the right temperature but when i put it in park and leave it running idle it slowly gets warm, and when it gets a little pat half way it slowly cools down again, is this normal?

On these v-6 engines that is normal from what I have seen. Temp wise they run from 195 to 210. Might look at the cooling fans and see when they come on. If you notice that the temp keeps climbing then change the thermostat.

Make sure theres no air in the system, and the thermostat is definitely cheap insurance against overheating.

This was a topic being discussed just a few days ago elsewhere on the internet and the concensus was that the temperature is generally between 1/4 and 1/2 on the gauge. Not many people see it get above halfway.

If the high temps bug you that much, you can have the fans tuned for lower temp in the PCM.
