My bumper to bumper certified used warrenty expires in two months. My certified drivetrain warranty has another two years left after that. I just had my car in to the dealer for tire rotate and free oil change. They found both front wheel hubs were bad to the point of not being safe to drive. However, after telling me this and the $1100 price tag to fix, they seemed surprised by the fact the car was under warranty, but they did the repair (that I know of).
I find it odd that I heard nothing and only felt a minor wobble in the steering prior to the repair. Shouldn't I have noticed two terminally bad hubs?
Maybe I am being paranoid, but now I am wondering if I should have at least the major non drivetrain items inspected before the warranty expires.
What are your thoughts on spending my own money for an inspection like this? If yes, should I trust the dealer or try to find an independent mechinc shop to do an inspection?

Wow, $550 per hub is steep. Dealer should give a minimum of a 12 mo/12000 miles warranty on their work. The work they do should withstand that. That said, no I would not trust a service advisor at a gm dealer, a mechanic maybe. Dunno which model you have, but the hubs for these car are not nearly as high as the dealer will quote you. Fronts can be bought for around $120 or so with shipping from rock auto for a gm genuine replacement. Those hubs carry a lifetime warranty on the part.

With regards to noticing the hubs failing, the first one on our 2012 was not noticeable at all. If not for having an alignment done, never would have known. The next one that failed, I could hear it in cornering and kind of feel it in the wheel.

Hubs are not covered by gm under the factory gm powertrain warranty, or at least they weren't on our 12.

As far as paying an independent mechanic to check out your car while it is still in warranty, might not be a bad idea. Be sure you will get their findings in a written form before having them look it over.

The hubs can be checked by jacking up the car one tire at a time and rocking the wheel with your hands at 12 and 6 position. If there is play, then the hub bearings may be bad. Be sure the car is secure before trying to rock the wheel.

I've had the same wheel bearing fail two times on my 2010. the first time i never heard a sound out of it. it was the first time i'd had a bearing fail and not make any noises. so now i'm paranoid of low speed rumble in parking lots looking for another bad bearing. the dealer is straight screwing you over at that price for two wheel bearings. even if you pay a shop 300 to replace them you can get it fixed almost 4 times over before meeting the dealer cost. maybe call another dealer and get a quote on that repair out the door, check with local shops as well.

paying for a walkthrough isn't a bad idea, i'd go to a different dealer/shop than the one that supposedly fixed yours and see if they come up with any issues. kind of like double checking both shops work. but really if it runs and drives fine, you're probably ok. check trans fluid color would be about the biggest concern i might have.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know they probably were bad as it is possible for bad hubs to show few symptoms. An old girlfriend from many years ago has a son who works at a GM dealer shop one town over and she has mentioned on Facebook that she could ask if he could do a once over I decide to pay for one at that location.

In case you are wondering, yes, the old girlfriend is still on good terms as it was like middle school when we "went steady". Also, yes, the old girlfriend and my wife are friends on facebook. Finally, no this has not caused any problems. I get into plenty of trouble with my wife on my own, so I don't even need any help from an old grade school flame on that front.:D

Update.
Went ahead and paid the $150 for a broad inspection and a special extra focused check of the steering and suspention given a wobble I have noticed the last month or so.

Mixed result.

The big win is that two warranty covered fixes are to be done. One is a power steering job to fix a leak and the other is a loose outer tie rod being fixed. Just from the amount of time they are keeping my car, I will guess this is like $1000 of work being done under the certified warranty.

On the down side, I will have to pay for the wheel balance and allignment. The tires have uneven wear, but there is way too much good tread left to get new tires.

Hopefully this will get me an extra year or two before any non-drivetrain issues crop up. Less worried about drivetrain right now as there are two more years on that part of the warranty.
