I had the same problem with my 2014 Impala 2LTZ.

You must swipe-down to lower the preset panel. It is frustrating and tricky. You do not swipe quickly like a smart-phone.

Put one finger on the screen, above the preset panel. Hold your finger there for a second or two (take your time). Then pull down the screen and it will restore it to the full-screen.

It may take several attempts, but you’ll finally get it.

Is this a “bug” with the radio unit? In the first picture you can see the very top of the frame of the “hidden” window, but it’s not done cleanly (not completely hidden) … like this is not intended by the software. Maybe they need to update the software to eliminate this glitch?

I purchased my 2014 Impala 2LTZ (new model - with the screen) new. It repeatedly had operating issues with various displays and functions. I had to return it numbers times to the dealer for software updates, often with a TSB already issued describing the problem I was having. After an update, another electronic feature would change or disappear or malfunction.

During the first year of ownership and repeated updates, eventually, the service advisor told me that Chevrolet Technical Center notified them that a full system update for the car was going to be be available soon. I was told to wait until that was available, then bring the car in for the full-update (which may take several hours). I did that. After that update, the second trip mileage log feature disappeared and the clock would advance 15 minutes (over a period of several days) after being set. The clock inaccuracy continues today.

At one point, my wife touched the screen and the “half-screen” display appeared. We read the owner’s manual and the radio system booklet, but we could not find instructions on how to fix it.

I returned to the dealership and talked to a 20-something female service advisor. I got the eye-roll and hair flip, and she told me you just had to swipe the screen to fix it.

I told her that I could not get it to work and asked that she show me. She went to the car in a huff and repeatedly swiped the screen. She could not get it to return to the normal display.

Exasperated, she got one of the technicians that does the computer updates. He showed us how to return the screen to the normal display (as I described in the earlier posts).

Since then, several times the screen has gone to “half-display” mode after we touched it for something. I suspect there is a command for the half-display, but I don’t know what it is. Now that we know how to return the screen to full-display, we can correct it.

It is a very maddening system with no instructions in the manual or radio system supplement for some features. It was clearly designed by an idiot who had no concept of user-friendly controls and failed to include instructions on how to use some of the hidden features.

Dealer personnel are not what they used to be. A couple years ago I had my hands full and decided to take my 2010 to the dealer for a check-up of some specific things I identified on my car. I also wanted their hundred dollar bumper to bumper inspection.

I arrived at appointed time, and she somehow didn't know why I was there. She looked distracted and said "okay boomer here's what we will do for you" and proceeded to tell me things I did not want or need. I looked at her and held my tongue while I reminded her that I had emailed my list and had their quote and asked her where that person was. She said he was too busy.

Now I had never seen her before but I decided it was enough. I realized she had no value so I picked up my key and headed to the general office. While I waited the girl in service came around the corner and handed me a $3500.00 quote for a complete rack-and-pinion replacement. She said it's a common trouble. I asked how she knew my car needed that (nobody looked at it yet and I had never had my car in their shop before). She looked at me like I was being an idiot.

Right then the general manager came out of his office and said hi asking if I had decided which new car to buy. I hadn't decided yet so he asked how he could help. I explained my morning experience, he listened and understood. Then he said that I should just trade in my 2010 because lots of them were failing especially the rack and pinion. He called the sales guy over. I stood there getting more and more upset.

These people could not have cared less about what I wanted, which was to keep my 2010 and put in some repairs for good measure, and to get a new car if I found what I wanted. Further, I felt they were bullying and realized they were certain of their superiority.

I'm not a young buck anymore lol. Never in my life had I ever truly understood the meaning of the word bewildered. It was stunningly surreal. I think I said something like I'll get back to you. I wandered back to service, got in my car, and never went back.

Like plenty of people I'm a very competent and capable home mechanic. Subsequent to that disappointing experience, I have diagnosed and repaired several systems on mine. It's running like it was new. I just got back from a ~1,200 mile trip seeing family. One said my car drives so quiet and smooth, I smiled and said thanks. I still have a couple things I want to do come summer. One of those things I just don't want to do in my garage. So I'll find a local private shop if I decide to farm it out.

But I think about that experience and I say to myself 'what about all these people who cannot turn a wrench, does everyone actually put up with service people's attitudes 🙄' . . .

@1999 White C5 Coupe : So ... the system has bugs!

But this one seems to be a very simple one: it looks like they defined two (sub) Windows, and the Bottom Window is movable and overlapping ... when both should both be fixed-sized, non-movable, and non-overlapping. Now, maybe this has something to do with Options from one Trim to another ... or maybe it's just a "bug"!

I know this much: GM doesn't test their software very well, or if a sub-contractor is developing it for them ... they're rubber-stamping the Test Protocol ... and not even performing any "Free-Play" testing that would flush out some of these obvious problems.

They left my blue courtesy lamps ON in my (bought brand new) 2011 Equinox! I noticed it right away the night I brought the vehicle home from the Dealership, but they were very tiny lamps (in the Center Console), so I figured they had it covered. In fairly short order, however, my Battery was dead, the key was locked in the Ignition, and I had to make a trip back to the Dealership for a software change to turn the lamps OFF.

The Clock running too fast sounds like a bad component inside the Radio Unit (although you said it happened immediately after a software update)? If that's true, maybe they overwrote some Timing Interval Parameter with an incorrect value which is causing the "Tick" to occur slightly more frequently now that it should be (maybe the value got rounded up, for example).

I think, in the future, if I ever have to go back to a Dealership for a "software update" ... I'm gonna run my own Checklist/Test Procedure to try to immediately identify what they just broke ... because I have zero confidence in GM's ability to test its software sufficiently.

... which is very sad because ... as HMI (Human-Machine-Interface) Interfaces go ... these things in automobiles are super-simplistic.

And I would bet that what some are calling "hidden features" are actually system "bugs" that are bleeding through across multiple platforms ... because GM didn't test their software very well (or at all)!
