Just wanted to share my experience here.

I mostly lurk here, owned many B Body cars but have been driving Ford panther platforms for the past decade.

Switched jobs recently and got a 2015 Impala LS Limited. One thing that was lacking was the non HMI stereo. Was looking for an aftermarket solution and then stumbled upon jtrosky's post.

Communicated with jtrosky many times, he was patient and answered all my questions, and low and behold, here we are, an 8th Gen Impala with aftermarket XM Radio that works seamlessly with the GM1010.

I bought the kit from jtrosky for the GM1010, bought an aftermarket backup camera that mounts behind the license plate (just the camera head sticks out), a junkyard impala roof antenna from LKQ with Onstar and XM (my antenna only had the Onstar cable), an antenna cable to go from the roof antenna to the SXV200, an isimple GM XM Radio kit, and an SXV200 XM tuner.

Installation is just as simple as everyone else says. I had it one in less than 3 hours, the most annoying parts were removing the back seat to do the wiring for the camera to the head unit and pulling down on the headliner to get the roof antenna swapped out. Everything, including the XM radio, was all plug and play.

I did have one issue, and that was the XM radio not being recognized by the head unit, which was due to the fact that I didn't read the directions for the isimple, which states you MUST plug in the SXV200 before you plug it into the cars harness.

Other than that, it works flawlessly. A great solution for those that want to get XM and have a factory look in their head unit.

That is awesome, @wchain! Rosen always said that the GM1010 would not work with an external, third-party XM tuner, so when you mentioned that you had an external XM tuner working with the stock head-unit, I was hoping that it would also work with the GM1010. Basically, the iSimple device makes the external XM tuner look like a stock XM tuner to the head-unit, which is why it works with both the stock head-unit and the Rosen GM1010.

We weren't sure it would work, but @wchain was willing to give it a shot, which I really appreciate! Now we at least have an XM solution available for those with the GM1010 that don't have a stock XM tuner! Something that we though was not possible before.

So glad that you got the XM part working and that you are enjoying the GM1010! There are a few Rosen-specific threads here on the forum in case you have any questions or issues (or using this thread is fine too!). You can do a LOT of cool stuff with the GPS app too... And of course, the GM1010 has it's own little quirks too - so feel free to ask away if you have any questions.

Also - I even install little 8th gen Impala GPS icons in a bunch of different colors (instead of the little triangle) - so you can enable one matching the color of your Impala if you want. :) Forgot to mention that to you. :)

@wchain - by the way, what backup camera did you end up purchasing? Just curious.

EDIT: Oh - and by the way, how the hell did you get the headliner down? Did you remove the 2 big round "headliner retainer clips" near the rear windshield to "drop" the headliner? A year or two ago, I wanted to drop the headliner due to a "bass vibration" that was bothering me. For the life of me, I couldn't get those two big round "clips" to come out! Just curious a) if you removed them fully, b) if so, what "technique" did you use to get them out and c) were you able to re-use them? I was so afraid of damaging the headliner permanently while trying to get those headliner retainers out that I eventually gave up and just shoved a rag between the car's roof and the headliner to put more "downward pressure" on the headliner to stop the "bass vibrations" (which did actually work, but still...).

Thank you!

EDIT2: How about a picture of the new ride as well! :)

I used a trim fork to pull the two large Christmas tree clips at the back of the headliner and gently pulled down, then I contortioned myself to where my head was against the back window so I could see the antenna connection.

The 2012+ LS Impalas are probably the single best bargain out there... Think about it - you're getting a cadillac-grade engine and a 6-speed trans for a ridiculously low price. With a few mods, they look fantastic as well. There really isn't all that much difference between the LS and LT - or the LS and the LTZ for that matter.

I paid $11K for a 2015 with 25K miles.

LS doesn't have a pass power seat, chrome rings around cluster, compass, outside temp reading, dual zone climate, and remote start, and has 16" wheels and FE1 suspension. Other than that, the cars are pretty much the same.

I've added remote start, window tint, STBs, and the GM1010 with the goodies already.

Wes - back to the headliner.. :) Here is a link to a picture of 2 different headliner retainers. Do you remember which one you had?

My 2012 LT (with a sunroof) has the bigger retainers. Is that what you have as well? I remember trying to pull those damn things out and couldn't get them out for the life of me! Since you can't use the headliner to "pry" against, you can simply pull down on them. I was so afraid that the "heads" of the retainers would break off and then I'd really be screwed (the "shaft" would then be stuck in there). At that point, I guess I'd have to drill them out or something? I can't believe how much a PITA it was to get them out... Just wondering which ones you had and if you had any issues pulling them out.

I am loving that camera design. Can you post a picture of it installed? I'm on my second camera now. Just can't seem to get the look I want. That one might be it.

I just went ahead and ordered it. Hoping 3 times is the charm. Do you have it mounted at the top or bottom?

The smaller ones for sure.

Sorry for not replying sooner! I have been on the road today.

Got home and installed a Auto Dimming mirror from LKQ I picked up on ebay. Onstar and map lights.

Plug and play too!

I just wanted to post a follow-up to this old thread. Just a heads-up that while the iSimple XM Tuner did work with the Rosen 1010, the OP later found that he had battery-drain issues when both the Rosen and the iSimple XM tuner were connected (each worked fine without any battery drain issues when connected separately). We never did get to try another iSimple device (in case the original was defective in some way) because the OP ended up getting rid of the car. :)

I've found similar battery-drain related issues with the Rosen 1010 in one other case - and in that case, there was an aftermarket remote start installed.

I can't confirm this 100%, but I suspect that the Rosen GM1010 is not fully "compatible" with certain aftermarket items that communicate over the CANBUS network. I suspect that the Rosen and the aftermarket item end up keeping the CANBUS "awake" until the battery dies.

Just just something to keep in mind with the GM1010 - and more importantly, something to keep in mind specifically with the iSimple XM tuner - even though it technically works, it has major "side effects" (as in the battery dies!). :)
