Gas pedal position

I need some advice here. The gas pedal on my car sits way way back behind the brake, and when I need to brake fast, there have been some times when my foot has got caught on the side of the brake pedal because I really need to pull my foot back before I switch pedals, and it's becoming not only a nuisance, but a safety issue in my opinion.

Is there any thing I can do about the gas pedal position, to get it to move forward some? I don't have much cable left to spare at the throttle body side of things, so I can't even spare a centimeter of cable, which is probably going to be a big deal.

gas is a pain to move, but possible, I wouldn't mess with it. Now the brake pedal on the other hand is much easier to move, The rod length can be adjusted to put the pedal where you want it to start moving.

That sounds like a good idea, because even when the brake pedal pushed all the way, it has like 4" between the wall and pedal. Which is more than the distance of the gas and brake.

I knew a short guy that had to attach blocks made out of 2 x 4 to his pedals - no lie. If you can't get the brake pedal moved enough, maybe you can add something to the gas pedal that looks better than a chunk of wood.

Turns out there is slack on the throttle cable, too much.. I could easily pull the pedal back further and line it up with the brake, but there was this much slack. So for the time being to see how it worked, I put some zip ties on it to pad the cable, and it worked. Pedal is where it should be, and I now can actually reach WOT without too much effort like I used to be able to do. This is of course, a temporary fix, but I see now way to actually adjust the cable.

Ahh, glad you found it. May have to get a new cable... Look at the other end.sometimes you can remove slack from there.

Doesn't seem to be a way to do it, it's just a rod sideways slit into the throttle body, but it's crimp tired on, no way to fix the slack. Sadly the zip ties was the only thing that worked. And so far, it's driving great, easier actually.

But, about how long do you think the zip ties will hold up before I can get a new cable? Couldn't even afford gas this week, and paycheck isn't for another week. I need it to hold up, because now that I put the cable ties on, turns out I can't get anything in there to cut it off, without possibly accidentally cutting the cable, which I definitely don't want to do now.

Depending on the ties used and such, I can't really say for sure. It may be years, but then again it could be days. I would fix it correctly when you get the chance to. At least you know the problem.

I forgot to mention that cable condition comes into play here. If it streched like that it may be ready to give way somewhere else.

Yea I had a feeling it may be ready to snap soon. My hood release cable snapped a few years ago.. Gas pedal isn't anything different really.

planning the cable replacement once i get paid next week, i'll do it immediately.

I'm sorry that I couldn't help more. Frankly I'm unsure how long it will last.

That's fine, thanks for the help you have provided, much appreciated. I'm sure it'll last long enough, if anything, I'm sure it'll return to where it was before I did this, which was still drivable at least.

I've had zip ties that lasted years in the sun no less. They were holding cables on a tower

It should hold fine. If you must cut them off try fingernail clippers. They work really good when you don't want to nick wires or cables. I've used the little lead weights for fishing line (the ones that you clamp shut on the line with pliers) for jobs like this before - so that may be another temp fix option if the ties don't hold up, but I think you'll be fine.
