'08 SS 30,000 miles

During very slow driving such as starting/stopping/turning/ parking, etc, a very faint clunk type noise can be heard through the steering column. Steering wheel is rock solid & car drives great, but the noise is noticable. Car is under warranty, but I thought I'd put this out for some feedback before taking the car in.

I would bring it back to dealer and have them check the intermediate steering shaft. Just had mine replaced last week. Noise is gone for now.

Clunk in steering wheel

Incredible to think that after 8-9 years, this Delphi made intermediate steering shaft (ISS) is exhibiting the same nonsense! My 2001 Impala had the same issue as you describe. The warranty fix was to lubricate it with a "special kit". Problem came back after warranty (only 3/36,000 back then). With dealer quote of 200 bucks, I did the job twice myself afterward using wheel bearing grease. The second time at around 75,000 mile I packed the heck out the it, and at 130,000, the problem is hopefully gone for good. Too bad the part couldn't be designed and built right the first time!

Got it fixed.

Took it in & they replaced the ISS with part #25937479. This is not the updated part #19179923 that the TSB recommends. We'll see how it holds up.

A new TSB was issued on 3/27/08. This does include a new designed ISS. The number is 19179923. The TSB is 01-02-32-001O

Mine just got replaced at about 34k, same part number as above. Car definitely feels more solid now. If it fails again in 34k then I also have an extended warranty to 100k. Here is something I just found using google. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/Bluegorilla/2008-12-04_181846_Impala_Steering_shaft.pdf

Appranently the 19979923 part number is for 2000-2005 Impalas. 2006-2008 have part number 25913681. Maybe the 25937479 is a sutiable sub or "updated" part. Maybe Chevy got tired of replacing them and actually developed a good one. I know that is a big wish.

I just shoot mine full of white lithium grease every 20K miles. Works good.
