Dual Exhaust help

6547 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  David3800
Hello!

I am quite interested in installing a dual exhaust for my '04 Impala LS. Engine is still the stock 3.8L V6. To be honest I do mostly want it for aesthetics but I'm willing to pay the money to get the real thing, Even if it only has the smallest effect on performance. I'd like to see exhaust coming out of both pipes!. This concept is completely foreign to me as I haven't even the slightest clue of where to begin. This is why I'd like your help, even speculation is welcome. If you have any ideas or have had or seen this done, Let me know!

i would think a cat back exhaust system will be the easiest and most effective. most cars anymore don't have the physical room to run true dual pipes all the way back. basically the make a kit that right after the catalytic converter it splits out into two seperate pipes and mufflers. you will need extra mounting hardware as well to hold up the extra side of the pipes. any reputable exhaust shop would be able to facilitate this for you or tell you if it can be done. different mufflers give off different sounds. so you may want to youtube your year/motor dual exhaust and see what kinds of sounds they produce before you go drop several hundred dollars on a kit. ask the shop which ones seem popular/they like as they're the ones hearing which mufflers sound the best all day long.

i had a buddy do a dual exhaust install of his own on a 98 chevy truck....he chased exhaust leaks till the day he got rid of the truck. he said he'd never do exhaust himself again and to just pay the pro's to do it. he's decently mechanically gifted as well so i'm taking his word on that one lol.

just my two cents...

Yeah, sounds like that's the way I'll go about it, I'm just a little concerned that some brands that make cat back exhaust might just have one actual pipe and one fake one. I just see them too much and I can't imagine being too happy walking out to my car in the winter and seeing Exhaust flowing out of only the right side lol. But like you said I just gotta watch video's and talk to the shop.

I would say if it was me and wanted to have this done. I would go to a Exhaust Shop and ask for a SS Exhaust from headers back. Seeing the cars have the same motor unlike the 06-09 that has a V8 It would cost more then the normal LS seeing there will be a Y pipe towards the back and extra pipe from there back.... You know the funny thing is I was looking over some Impalas not that I don't have enough now but I seen this one car that I was going to ask about some thing I have seen now on 2 cars from the same area maybe was same owner for all I know lol.... But one of the cars was a Silver LS and it has dual. From the stance of the tips it looks like it wasn't the same setup as the SS because they sit outside of where the SS pipes sit....

This picture is of a SS

This picture of an LS with dual Exhaust.

Here is a diagram. I am not 100% sure this is right but does say it is for the 04 IMpala.

This was listed as the Diagram of the LS setup Again Not 100% if it was right

Ah! Those are nice diagrams. Also I don't know why I didn't think of looking here before but car ID has 3 different Cat back systems that look pretty good. On the topic of the SS exhaust, from the quick bit of searching I've just done I found SS pipes made by Dynomax, only problem is I think the supercharger on the SS will be the killer for me on that plan. without it, I may potentially need smaller pipes than the SS. But maybe it wouldn't make too much of a difference? I'm really not sure, the option is still on the table though. I really like the oval shape tips on the SS.
Also check the walker dot com site as they have a parts finder and try different options for your year model and see what it returns. I have the 06 3.9 with dual mufflers and everywhere I've looked it says if welded replace this part, this part and this part which is the resonator, pipe splitter after resonator and both mufflers. I did notice under my car it was clamped just before the resonator.

I need to see if I get the parts and bring the old still together and new in and see what a shop would charge to weld it up for me and see if I'd still come out money ahead. Don't know yet if my parts could be clamped or not or if I'd have to get a coupler to have something to clamp in case all the parts are the same pipe size.

As you can see these are all things you have to take into consideration when looking at doing a build for yourself plus would you need a different rear bumper cover, get bumper cover painted to match if not can you get hangar brackets mounted for the extra muffler and get parts to let it hang low enough but not to low where you'd have issues.

Cat back won't make you faster or slower for the 3800 platform
You could go to the wreckers and grab a grand Prix GT/gtp catback, 04-05 impala SS catback, 06+ Ss v8 impala catback, they all bolt right up with no issues.

I have a catback form a 2006 impala SS with magnaflow tips

Well, after a lot of looking and checking out the options provided in this thread. (A lot of good suggestions by the way, Thank you for the time!) I went to an appointment at a speedy brakes and exhaust my dad recommended. (He's been happy with the results of jobs that come back to the dealership where he works) When I got there I told the owner what I wanted from the system. My only criteria was that it not make the car crazy loud, but sound as close to stock as possible. Within 10 minutes he brought up a quad tipped exhaust! Which by the way I'm 90% sure is the Grand Prix GT/gtp catback system Grimsin brought up in the previous post. The decision pretty much seemed like a no-brainer at that point and there was no way I was going to pass up on a quad tip system. The owner did also bring up the SS system but didn't offer that as an option, More or less used the SS system as an example of how the job was possible. Wish I could go into more detail but aside from the fact that most of you guys already know what the procedure is and don't need it explained, I am a kinaesthetic learner and did not retain the information from his explanation. The exact reason Tapatalk will soon become my best friend. However I'm fairly certain it was just as simple as Grimsin said, it's going to bolt up with no issues. Just kinda told me in a way that lost me, I will never understand how. Anyways I'm just Rambling now.

I got one more question, I am aware that this will decrease my ground clearance to a degree, anyone here with a system like this had any problems with curbs or the likes?

Thanks again.

As long as they route it the proper way as the other dual exhaust sustenance for that cat it shoudnt decrease much if any. If you don't like it, tell them before you leave and have them fix the issues you see.that's just customer service at that point.

since the tips will be under the rear bumper, sometimes they scrap if you driving straight off a driveway with a steep drop to the road, so i always try to drive out on a angle if the driveway has a big drop off(hopefully that makes sense lol)

Also, I'm sorry the pictures are a little dark, I'm away from home today till Wednesday and lack the proper software to fix the issue. I'll also be taking some underside pictures when I get the chance.
Looks great. I hope you enjoy your new Setup

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to come
