...is it possible to put one into a car that doesn't have it? I have this 'cubby' in the center of my headliner, behind my windshield, I was wondering how it would be wired and what I would have to do if I was able to locate one and try to put it in.

You can do one. THere are a few things that you will need....

Find a Good donor car, (One that has the DIC) you will need the Unit, The Mounting Bracket, and the Wiring harness.

The hardest part is putting in the Harness. The problem is that it runs from the front where the DIC goes to the back of the car. Sadly it don't make since but that is how it is wired.

It used to be there was a company that made a T Harness for this install. However from what I have found out over the last couple of years they don't offer that anymore. However that may have changed. In all Honesty it still needs to run to the back so it would be better to get an OEM harness anyway...

With your Cubby that you have in there now, There is one Torx Bit screw on the mirror side, THen there is 2 CLIPS on the side, and 2 metal clips in the front of the cubby that holds it to the liner. The Bracket is just free floating in the roof....

Also another part you may or may not need is the Air TEmp Sensor that is out by the Radiator. If you look under plastic bit infront of the Radiator and there is a 2 wire wiring connector hanging there I would be sure to find the one the in Donor car and take it as well...

Don't mistake the sensor mounted at the top for the Airbag system as the one I am talking about. (It looks kind of like a bullet (ACDELCO 10248414 GM Original Equipment INFO DISPLAY(U68)))

You could run your own wiring system for your DIC as well. Also I am not 100% sure if the Cubby and the DIC are the same size or not. It could be that the Cubby is little larger so the hole in the Headliner with the cubby is larger then the dic. It has been a while so I can't remember off hand....

If you do it and want some help I am sure there are others and myself that would be more then happy to help all we can...

lol I may have made the wrong assumption about the cubby that I thought it was just an empty spot where the DIC would go. But I will look into it if I'm ever up for a project. Seems like I'd have to take the headliner off to wire it to the back.

Well I will say that even if you were able to buy a T Harness you wouldn't want to remove your wires. It is best to CUT THEM off at the POCKET area. Run the Wires to the back however you care to. Some do it one way and another may do it another. But yes some drop the liner... I guess you could look at it at one of 2 ways. Better you found out before you started the Convert how it needs to be done and saves you the going and pulling the parts or having them pulled for you and take out the Pocket, where ONce out it is some work to put it back in because there is no way to push the Clips back in place without pulling the liner out some. With the bracket in place, THe 4 clips don't want to snap back in without being able to hold the Black bracket above the liner area.... Also wouldn't have been good to take it out and find out all that you may have thought was there isn't there...

The thing about it is as I was saying you could make your own wiring and run it to the front of the car without much issue. I am not 100% sure about the Data Wire however as I do know that it is the most important wiring and even when I made my own wiring for a client I did tie that wire into the Rear wiring where the normal harness connects to the DIC all other wiring I pulled from the front of the car. Most of the wiring for the DIC, Would be Ignition (Brown), Battery (Orange), Ground(Black/White), Data 2 (Yellow), Ambient air Temp (Light Green/Black). Then there are some others in different model years if there is a Comp Sensor not built into the unit there would be 4 other wires off to that. I don't remember when they were built into the unit. Makes it so it shows N, S, E and W and so on...

About a Project. I think the hardest part would be really just moving the wires back to the Empty connection in the back of the car. The reason you don't want to remove your old wires is because they have them connected to the Headliner and it is made of Fiberglass, IF you were able to get them off it may damage the liner and or also make you itch at the least. I know your asking well what about the Donor car. In all honesty I didn't car what the liner looked like from the wrecked car and I was lucky enough to pull them myself so I didn't have to hear the yard say something like we don't have them lol Becasue it will be some work to get it off the donor. THe good news is that you will see where they go and know the best way without removing your liner to run the wires...

In a Few I took out the Liner anyway seeing they were having Dynamat added to the car roof line. So it was just an extra little bit of work while working in the area anyway....

I don't want to make it sound like you can't do it. Just wanted to Empower you with what would be needed so you only need to make one trip to the yard.

James

Maybe I will have to do another one and make a Write up with Pictures on what is done.

IF you do it maybe take some pictures as well and offer some of your own tips while doing yours...

@hg3300 Well I wanted to share with you some info about moving the cubby to DIC.. So you know one of the issues that I forgot because it was so long ago since I had done one. (A few had nothing and a couple had homebuttons and sunroof button) The cars with the Cubby It would need some mod or a new headliner. The problem is I forgot seeing only did one in the past and it was one that I took the headliner out of the donor car and installed in the clients car. So I never seen the difference. They were changing the Interior color and adding the DIC, Night/Day Mirror. Besides the head liner all the rest was just time to pull the new and pull the old and install the new...

About the Liner, The Cubby is larger then the DIC Unit and will leave a hole in the liner. I thought I would try and tell you before you took out the unit from the donor car. That way you don't damage the headliner and can get the hole thing.

However I want to tell you that the headliner isn't something that would be easy to put in the car with the seats in and the door on. I am not 100% sure as I have worked on a load of cars and have done many many mods. However IF my memory serves me right, We had the door off and the seats were out anyway because again we were replacing the Interior anyway...

Good news is, Unlike the other cars and my car today, doing the hole headliner is a much easier job. You take out 4 Screws from the back seat back support on the back deck, Remove 3 plastic panel plugs, Remove the Rear Deck pad, Unplug the unit from the passenger rear pillar, Remove all the trim, Backlights, the Clothes hook, the OS handle on front passenger, sun visor, with all that out the headliner is free to come out. If the donor car don't have a winshield or back window it can just move out that way. If it does, then remove door, and 2 front seats. maybe able to get away with only taking out 1 I had both out at the time I did the swap...

So here is what I did today...

Went to Pick N Pull, Found a 02 Impala LS, Had Onstar, DIC. So I took down the head liner, Pulled the wiring from the Rear Passenger, Up to the front passenger, to Center, Driver side, Drivers side rear, and unplugged the rear drivers side as well at the Rear window for ONSTAR... Took wiring, Found another LS with a Auto Dimming mirror, jacked that too, Laid out the wiring, ONly needed the Wiring from the rear passenger to the Rear light on the driver side. This Covers (Passenger rear dome light, Visor mirror light Pass, DIC, (Cut out the OnStar mirror plug put in the one for this mirror, Drivers Visor mirror light, and Drivers side back dome light)) the rest of the wiring was for Onstar so I removed that wiring... Also Someone before I made it there had cut out the Dic and left it on the seat. So I had to add them wires back for the DIC. This is something that is little hard because there are Multi color wiring with same colors. So I had to test the wiring and even though I couldn't find a wiring system for all the wiring that was there, I was able to tell what wire went where by the number to the one that was on the diagram.. So only leaves the other as it has to be that way kind of thinking lol... IN fact if it wasn't that plug orange (14) was by Yellow (15) and the other orange was in the middle of the plug so it couldn't be the one kind of thing. lol... But it was also because that one went to D at the back Pillar and I did test it out and was the right one ... Don't know what the other one goes to but I did connect it. Also the Brown there was 2 I got side tracked and opps didn't double check to the Rear and just connected it. Well it worked lol But tomorrow I will double check that Pin 1 goes to S in the back and if the other one is connected to that one I will swap them out so it is right... However it is a safe bet seeing that it worked that I have it right or both wires are Ignition wires anyway again only can find one brown on the Diagrams I have... I am sure that the wiring is there for the DIC unit with the Sun roof unit and I just thought about that so if I really wanted to double check I could just look that up and see if they reflect the missing 3 wires in there for that lol....

If you do have a sun roof it would make since that it would be in the wiring. They do have 2 different DIC units. One with Roof one without... The one I have don't have sunroof. However I may go and take the Whole top to the SS Indy that was there. If the headliner is intact.. I did notice that someone had started to pull the DIC. I would have taken that one but color was to dark, and it don't help that it was in the middle of a lake lol (Area that covered from just back of motor to start of the trunk was filled with water on both sides over the top of my boots lol)

Anyway I haven't got it all done yet. LOl I will tell you that out of the WHOLE change over the hardest part of this and if you don't do it the way I did. You could just pull the wires for theDIC and run them back and use a tool to remove the pins from the donor cars harness and add them to the one in the car already there... Then you don't have to remove the handles and lights in the back Because it is soooooooooo Hard to get them thiings back inline and connected back. Problem is there is a SPacer between the liner and the car, Trying to line that up and put a handle back in place is a PITA, Once you get them lined up it seems I can't get the screw in the body lol That was where most of my time was spent trying to deal with that lol... OTher then that it is really a easy thing to add. Have to put my car back together still because it started to rain.

I did just go out and take a couple pictures so you can see what I mean about the pocket hole size compared to the DIC...

James
Remember I am not done with this. So wires not wrapped yet either in this area.
