Chevrolet’s very first nine-speed transmission is finally rolling out, first debuting on the 2017 Malibu and then the 2017 Cruze Diesel and 2018 Equinox.

The new transmission is available with the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder 2017 Chevrolet Malibu and is said to be 3 percent more fuel efficient compared to the current six-speed automatic, netting a highway rating of 33 mpg. The new transmission also works with stop/start to increase fuel economy even more by shutting down the engine in stop-and-go traffic.

Chevrolet promises its nine-speed transmission, called the Hydra-Matic 9T50, will be refined and balanced, however, other automakers have experienced problems with their nine-speed units, mainly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) brands like Jeep. The nine-speed automatic is generally becoming more mainstream, as it was once reserved for luxury cars like Mercedes-Benzes and Land Rovers.

Chevy’s transmission has a wider 7.6:1 overall ratio than the current transmission, which translates into a meaty first gear for brisk off-the-line acceleration and a tall final gear for low-rpm highway cruising.

'The smaller steps between the gears, compared to the six-speed, enable smooth, almost imperceptible upshifts, for excellent refinement,' said Dan Nicholson, vice president, Global Propulsion Systems. 'No matter the engine torque or vehicle speed, the 9T50 is always in the perfect gear.'

Nicholson added that the new transmission will be available on four Chevrolet models and 10 GM products by the end of next year.

I drove my friends jeep with a 9 speed and it was not for me. It is constantly changing gears, and seemed like it would only ever even use the 9th gear if you were going downhill doing 80 mph on the highway. Hopefully GM did a better job of designing it, cause he is also on his 3rd transmission in under 40k miles. Just seems like with that many gears and constantly changing, there is more wear and tear on things than there needs to be. I think 6 gears is plenty. If you want to go more, they should work on making CVT more reliable.

...and the new Camaro ZL1 has a 10-Speed tranny option , I'd stick with the 6-Speed personally.

I honestly like how my 4-speed transmission shifts. I just wish Chevy had built it stronger and more reliable like the TEP transmissions. A 9 speed transmission is just too many unnecessary shifts.

I agree wkth everybody else in that there is too many shifts and changes happening on a constant basis for this to be anywhere near beneficial and cost effective on the actual consumer... If they thought the issues with units like the 700R4/4L60 (and the "E" electronically controlled variant...), the 4T65E were bad, just wait until these fucking things start going south... NOT something I would want to deal with, especially when its something that only the dealer will have the abiliy to diagnose and sawp...

The 6T70 seems to be doing just fine. WHY CANT PEOPLE LEAVE WELL ENOUGH THE FUCK ALONE FOR GOD'S SAKE???

I so wish that they would just keep perfecting existing engine and transmissions instead of coming out with completely new versions every few years. Can you imagine how reliable engines and trans would be if they just keep perfecting them instead of just replacing them every few years?

The GM 3.8L engine was a perfect example - that thing was bulletproof - because they just kept perfecting them every year - gradually identifying and fixing issues over time. Plus it would keep their costs down because they wouldn't have to spend a fortune on R&D, retooling factories, stocking a gazillion different parts, etc.

I think that the LFX engine, while already a really good engine, could be just as bulletproof as the 3.8 - but once again, instead of just continuing to perfect it, they did a complete re-design with the latest version - the LGX.

At least that's my take on it from an "outsider" point of view. Maybe an "insider" knows more about why they don't do things this way.

I'm a dyed in the wool Keep It Simple Stupid kind of guy.

But I see that engines are getting constantly more powerful, revving higher and lasting longer than they used to, by far, and I like that.

I also like that transmissions are getting stronger to match the engine outputs, and have more gears, which is almost entirely from CAFE requirements.

I hated my '10 4 speed auto, and love my 6 speed auto.

I think the Ford/GM 8 speeds they just came out with are awesome, and the new Ford/GM 10 speed can handle a huge amount of power.

Having more gears means the engine speed can stay in the sweet spot for better power under hard acceleration, and provide a more stable engine speed for better mileage under normal driving.

If they did the 9 speed as durable as the 6 and 8 speeds, then it'll be a boon to reliability and gas mileage.

I respect the old fashioned things they did right, but I cannot diss the new things they are doing right either.

Gas is only going up, and so are engine outputs and rev limits.

I love Chevy. I'm curious though to see how much this is gonna cost or what the price will be when it comes time to replace it. I know this stuff goes through rigorous testing as with anything new. But as you guy's know it's likely to experience a few hiccups along the way before they get to work the bugs out of it.

Even my buddies '13 Civic he likes to talk up has had a couple little meltdowns, the car did the job but we all know these things can happen. That being said I understand what this system is built to accomplish but I think I'll be sticking to my tried and tested 4 or 6 speeds... Just in case. Because for me even the difference between my 04 Impala LS and the 2016 Malibu 6 speed's MPG while relatively speaking is at least numerically distant, isn't enough for me to make the jump. For some it might be more Viable but even the 9 Speed's 3% fuel efficiency increase just isn't enough considering these factors.

I don't know, maybe it's just my love for my '04 that makes me a bit biased but hey. I guess time will tell. I would love if this new system performed without a hitch. Then I'll jump on the 9 speed train... to be used as a winter car... to protect my '04 from the harsh winters of Canada. :angel

Personally, I also prefer the way the 4-speeds shifted. The 6-speed in my 2012 is constantly shifting. I don't need the 3% fuel economy boost. :) Gas is actually cheaper now that is way a few years ago (I think?). I tend to prefer reliability over "new design"...

He just asked out of curiosity, you know what it's like, this is as you can see new technology to a lot of people. Me included, there's going to be a lot of questions. I believe that it's good to bring this stuff up. To a certain degree a little apprehension and a lot of curiosity should in the long run assist in the development of Chevy's system.

I'm sure researchers have access to case study's and other information that can help achieve this. That said I'm sure that consumer input would play a large part. Concerns brought up in this forum I'd imagine won't be solely referenced in research but I'd like to believe that they would be echoed by multiple sources. Because when more information starts to come out about this, a lot of these questions are going to end up being answered in articles. A lot of which may not have been answered had they not been asked. If I had to conduct research of any kind, I would want to get input from the widest spectrum of my target demographic.

Really, who better to gather info from than the very people who want to use your product?

My '16 Malibu 2.0T came with the Aisin 8 speed, now a 9 speed? With these hollow heavily electronic controlled tranny cases compared to the older mechanical ones, it is easy and cheap to throw in another planetary gearset to gain extra gears, but the increased hunting and shifting of the closer ratio gears is not worth the few drops of gas you save.

Glad I bought the '17 Impala V6 because even 6 spd is pushing it when its' shift points are at low speed turns.
