I am about to change my trans gasket on my 04 impala, but I am curious if the 04 has a filter that needs to be replaced with the gasket. Does anyone have any advice?

You're replacing the gasket to fix a leak? Or is it part of a fluid change?

Your 04 has the 4T65E transmission. It has a filter, which can be replaced. There's a seal on it which should be replaced as well. As I recall, it can be a little tricky, so you may want to read up on it.

There are two types of gaskets. Some filter kits include a simple, flat rubber gasket. There is also an original equipment style gasket which is re-usable (but will eventually wear out). It has some molded ribbing. They cost more, but I think they also seal better and more reliably than the simple rubber ones.

HTH.
