Hello everybody, I'm new to the site and was wondering if some of y'all can help me out here. Well about two weeks ago we had temperature that where in the low 30 and well i didn't have much antifreeze in the car and blew out the freeze plug:mad: two of them one in the front and one in the back.
I check the dip stick today and I think water got in there it look kinda milky and also check where you put the oil in and also look milky in there.
My question is how bad is this? Do i have to get a new engine or there something eles I can do? please help me out here don't know much about car so any help would be greatly apreciated.
Oh almost forgot its a 2002 Impala 3800 3.8

Just replace the freeze plugs. They make new steel ones or adjustable rubber type. The rubber type I would use as a last resort.

Milky oil is more likely that the lower LIM gasket has failed. Since you had more water than antifreeze I take it that it already was loosing coolant somewhere. Replace the LIM gasket and most likely the motor should be fine.

If you can do the work then less than $100.00 for parts it is worth trying on this motor.

I did my own LIM gaskets on my 3400, and with all the new coolant and oil, it ran me about $200 and 10 hours or so, but that was in a freezing garage in January or February of last year. The 3800 is a little easier to do the LIM gaskets than the 3400, as well.

LIM= Lower Intake Manifold

When it goes out, the oil and coolant are able to mix, thus giving you the milky look. This is not a good thing, get it fixed ASAP.

Thanks guy y'all giving me some hope, now about the freeze plug the one in the front looks kinda easy but the one in the back seems impossible to get to, There is some sort of sensor in the way and no room to put the new freeze plug. Have one of you guys put one on before?

IIRC, the knock sensor is in the way on the back one, and that is a PITA to get at (but you can do it) w/ the trans there

theres 2 bolts on the shield around the KR sensor, one is on its ownm the other is the bolt that mounts the trans brace to the engine

go thru the wheel well, once the shield is off, then remove the knock senor

dont know how much room you'll have to work with though...


The LIM gaskets are fairly easy to do if you have any mechanical ability. they're ~$40 IIRC thru the vendors (ZZP/INTENSE), also order coolant elbows and a t-stat just to be safe

IF you decide to do this on your own, let us know and we'll post the torqure order/specs for you

Glad I found this old thread. I had drained my radiator to put in a new thermostat and coolant sensor in my 3400, then flushed the system with water real good through the heater hose. I thought all the water would have drained too but some must have remained because a freeze plug later popped even though I left the radiator drain open.

So now I have to get the freeze plug back in there but I thought I'd check here for any tips or warnings. Never done a freeze plug before. One question is whether the block might have cracked? But it seems there couldn't have been much water in it in fact the thermostat housing was removed and the coolant pipe running to the heater hose was off so I'd think everything would have drained pretty darn good and not much water was in the engine to freeze. Obviously enough to pop the plug, but could there be engine damage too?

Hopefully not, sounds like the freeze plug did what it is suppose to. When you get under there and look you should see a obvious crack if it did. But with most of the water out you should be fine.

The reason it pooped is that though you removed the hoses there is still some depth of water that will remain if the engine block drain plugs are not removed. I do not recommend removing them on older vehicles as they more than likely break instead of removing easily.

Yes I have a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo SS with a 3800 3.8 Leter V6 Engine , and what I'd like to know is there a freeze plug in the front left lower corner on it ?
Cause I've got a water leak there and the block isn't cracked because THERES no water in the oil on the dipstick ?
