Hi all. I have a 2001 Impala and battery has went dead several times in last month. Today did check with continuity tester and pulling fuses. I found three different sources that were pulling juice from battery. 1)PWR DROP 2)RADIO 3)CLSTER/BCM . I need to know what i should do from here. Thanks :dunno:

power drop one feeds your lighter and aux power points. Have a look to see what is the load is on them.
bcm , radio/clock will have a small load all the time.

Thanks..i have seen where they test the amps going to each one. i have exchanged 3 batteries at Autozone recently so hoping to figure this out soon. Not gonna hook new battery up until i find out what to do after figure out which one is the culprit. Very frustrating.

I would run over to auto zone and have them put there tester on and see what the problem is. Might be a alternator that screwing up.

Alternator has tested good 3 times now....and batteries just keep going dead. maybe if the radio and bcm draw a small amount af juice then the only other one was the PWR DROP fuse drawing ...will try again today after work

How much draw are we talking about? Some is normal, shouldn't be more than 50ma though, even that much is a little high. But remember to give it a minute when testing, the levels will spike for up to 30 seconds before they normalize.

What is plugged into your power ports/lighter plug? XM, detector , phone, i pod then one of the plugs maybe shorting to ground or the wire leading to it.

well it seems that with the Radio and PWR Drop fuses pulled...the only other drawing was the Clstr/BCM fuse and was drawing 7.5 volts. also something weird was the relay for Backup LP was making noises too but pulled that and same result. ready to throw in the towel and take to dealership and see what they can find.....uggg

My 05 seems to be doing the same thing, I haven't tested anything yet other than having auto zone testing my alt and batt. It started after I added a extra battery, it's been unplugged for a while now but I still get a drained battery.

My 2001 Impala going to local Chevy dealer tomorrow to get checked out. I will post what they tell me they found tomorrow. Hope it aint too bad but highly doubt it will be cheap.

Probably a faulty BCM, but I guess we'll see. When doing power drop tests, check amperage, not voltage. 7.5v doesn't mean much if its only 0.03A

Well I just picked up the 2001 Impala LS and dealership and techs found during a battery draw test that it was the factory amplifier that was the culprit. With the amp unplugged there is no draw. With the amp plugged in the draw is .321. Then they said to replacement amp was $440. soooo we have decided to just unplug amp and have a car that starts. We can use stereo while driving but need to unplug amp when turn car off. Oh well....got charged $100 labor only to find this out. Thanks to all of you for your input. Will let ya know if this IS the fix....lol. Hope so.........

thats a bummer, if i was in that position i would wire a button switch up so you can easily hit the switch. cant beleive its $400+ for that small amp.

I read that you can get a amp bypass jumper to plug into amp speaker wires and thus bypass the amp completely and then the head unit radio will power your speakers. Many have said that stereo actually sounds better like this but just need to be careful not to blow your speakers by turning down the bass. Jumper plugs readily available online for $10-$15. This is the route im gonna try 1st. Amp will be totally unhooked. also I found some amps on ebay from $50 used to like $169 new. not too bad.

Nice, you could upgrade it, take it and put in a after market amp and new speakers. To much work for me. Never heard of the jumper though.

Actually we just removed a aftermarket system thinking that was the problem. Little did we know it would be the factory amp...lol. oh well now my son can drive it a while more before it is traded in on a new car.

now that i think about it. on my previous impala, it was a 2001. i wanted to tap into the power from the amp. i assumed it would only get power once the key was turned on but it constantly had power, but the battery never drained on it. so im assuming it should be that way. ill have to check my 05' later once im home.

Ok since we have unplugged the factory amp we have not had any battery drain. !! and i unplugged the speaker wire harness from the amp and plugged in the amp bypass jumper and now have the stereo back. If you have a slow battery drain going on it just well may be that amp....Thanks to all you guys for your input...hope my experience helps someone too ....:beer:

With this do you unplug the small connector for the amp too? Could you post some pics showing the harness and the plugs?
