Do GM have a lot of airbag recalls lately?
Well, there are surely lots of airbag recalls lately, but I can't say I've noticed GM having very many. In fact, with all the Takata airbag recalls, GM is one of the least affected car makers (because they had very little Takata content in their cars).

The Takata debacle is something GM is fortunate to escape. They already have enough recalls for ignition cylinders, fire hazards, and electric power steering ; they don't need another problem.

But, after doing some googling, I do see where they had a recall for side curtain airbags in 2014.

I find the Takata airbag problem especially interesting. As a hobby rocketeer, I know a little - about a thimble full - about propellants. And the Takata problem is the result of one fix causing something else to break.

Apparently, the sodium azide that was commonly used to inflate airbags also tended to cause severe headaches. (I think I could handle a headache if the airbag just saved my life - it's a reasonable price.) So the Takata airbags used a different propellant, one containing the oxidizer ammonium nitrate. Unfortunately, this propellant is sensitive to moisture, which acts as a catalyst and causes it to burn much faster, like an explosive rather than a propellant. The result is exploding airbags in humid regions.

In light of this, I'm inclined to think the headaches weren't such a big deal.

I read up about the Takata airbag recall too and find it absolutely insane that Takata would use Ammonium Nitrate as an airbag propellant, as this is the chemical used in fertilizer bombs. All to save a few bucks, because sodium azide is a more expensive propellant.

I have a 2010 Impala manufactured in February of 2010. It is currently at the local Chevy dealership for the 4th time to address airbag wiring issues that I have paid for. Now the dealership wants $700 to fix another passenger airbag issue. The recall has been announced, but GM will not tell me if my car will be covered under the recall, stating that my only options right now are to pay to have it repaired or drive without airbags. The head of the Chevy service department even told me it was fine to drive my car without airbags because the seatbelts are the primary safety feature. I may have to wait 30 to 60 days to see if my car is recalled
In the meantime, I will not put my family's life at risk, even though that is what Chevrolet is suggesting. It has been 2 years since GM head Mary Barro apologized to the U.S. Senate and the American public for the ignition switch cover up. Has anything changed?
