Hey guys, so I wanted to start building up the suspension on my '95. I already ordered the police shocks, and they are being installed on Thursday. But, I would like to lower the car slightly as well. Would Impala SS springs be the way to go? Or would an aftermarket set like the one Eibach has be the better choice. I live in Wisconsin, so I don't want it to be too low. Thanks for the help!

What "police shocks" did you order?

The factory "police" shocks for that year are completely wrong, GM actually spec'd them for landings, NOBODY likes them. Most aftermarket companies just spec the same shocks as they would have for earlier years and those are stiffer and can be nice if paired well with the springs.

Far as springs I would not go buying 16+yo worn out original Impala springs, some new ones of similar spec are nice but you really didn't tell us how low you want it.

It is also a rather poor idea to install new front shocks now and then take them apart for a spring install as the front ones IF they come apart without breaking them sometimes the shaft gets spun which can damage the seal, ruining a nearly new shock.

With the AGE of the car I would probably be considering new greasables and bushings in the front with a spring swap since it will be apart anyway and it sounds like you are paying labor so why pay twice, even if doing the work yourself why pay for an alignment twice.

Far as picking springs I would wait till spring and try and see a few modded cars and get a feel for what you like. A friend in Racine has I believe the Eibach Impala lowering springs, a friend in Appleton has a mix and match setup with very stiff front springs and a circle track rear spring, other friend's have stock Impalas. I have Impala springs on my car but it sits a little higher in the nose due to modest lightening like a fiberglass hood and aluminum heads, AIR system delete.
Actually shock choice will affect height too Bilsteins being high pressure will usually make a car sit higher, I know when I put them on the rear of my car it raised it like 5/8".

On an unrelated note the color is medium garnet red.

Please don't be offended by this, but if you think you are going to improve the car by ordering magical cop car parts you are going to spend a lot for a little gain. You need to think of it this way, the Impala was just a Caprice in an evening dress and the cop car was just a Caprice in work clothes, NEITHER is particularly special or upgrade from what you already have., They got a drum brake proportioning valve so in STOCK form for normal driving I like the brakes you have better than the rear discs the SS and 9C1 got. With the drum prop valve the system doesn't work right and the rear discs barely function in normal braking though work appropriately under hard braking so they were fine when asked to perform hard.
People don't like it when I say that but I am one of few people who has had all three rear brake setups, the 9.5" drums on the 7.5" axle, the 11" drums on the 8.5" axle and the rear discs all in the same car.

Ditto. SS springs should have a lower height as stock than regular caprice or certainly than 9C1 springs, so theoretically SS lowering springs such as the eibachs should give a decent drop. However shocks as Dwayne said, are a major consideration.

Dwayne, have you used the rear discs with the stealth bolt mod? I would expect them to be better than the drums, but I'm curious.

That is why I put STOCK in all caps, the disc system needs to be modded to work properly.

Some aftermarket companies treat the Caprice and Impala as different models far as drop springs go, some don't, really is best to see a few cars in person and actually while throwing around variables tire size plays into things as well. Depending on options stock tires could vary a good 1" which affect final height and tire gap aesthetics.

To DwayneJ- I ordered Gabriel "police-spec" shocks. My final hope was to make the car just more stable in corners, and to not ride like an old 4x4 truck. I'm not looking to make the car a track-warrior/corner carver.

As far as the drop on the car, the ride height of a stock SS, or slightly lower (like the Eibachs). The car would sit on SS wheels and tires (stock tire size).

Are the cop car shocks really that poor of a choice if the car were to be lowered? I really am new to the car modding world, and would just like some suggestions or advice on what would work best for my car.

Check out this to know what all your options are: B-Body Suspension Be wary of Eibachs, they have mixed reviews. I know a lot of guys that like them, and also some who have had problems to it's a judgement call.

As far as shocks go, bilsteins are bulletproof, and some people consider worth the money. I like the idea of going with Monroe Severe Service shocks, although they are harder to find and some people claim when lowered too much they blow out.
