Is THAT what people do with these 3.5L engines ... use your bare hand?? I guess you could also use one of those hard, one-size-only, "socket"-style attachments that fits atop the end of the filter, but I've never owned one of those because they're too application-specific, and I'm afraid the filter diameter might change from vendor to vendor.
In my experience, whatever the filter can is, the wrench for it fits across brands of filters.

That said, I tend to stick with the same filter brand, so I don't test that notion very often :)

I have collected a drawer full of the "application-specific" ones, but I prefer having one that fits exactly versus trying to use a more universal one which may or may not work. So, for each car I buy, if I don't already have the wrench, I add a new one to my stash. I have quite a collection now :)

I'm with you on vertically oriented filters - much less messy !!

Those work well for removing the filters. There is a similar one in my pic that squeezes the can as you turn the ratchet.

The advantage to the type that fit snugly over the end of the can is that, if your hands are greasy when you're screwing the filter on, you can use the cap type wrench to give it that last ½ turn.
