Just found out today (after owning a 2011 Impala for a week), that the doors don't have actual lights come on when they are open. There is just a red reflector on each side.

Has anyone, even in previous years taken out the reflectors to put in actual lights?

I'm hoping to take them out and put lights in, most likely some LED scanners. Would make the car way more visible at night if I ever have to pull over for some reason....:dunno:

That'd be cool. IDK if they've ever had them.
Nope. Never stock on any 06+. I would be interested in possibly doing this too - so please keep us posted.

Can anyone post up a pic of the front and back side of these reflectors? That might help in giving me an idea for you guys to use on them. And if possible the dimensions of the reflectors as well please.

Lets get this started! Seems very possible!

The FRONT inside total space is 1 cubic inch.

The REAR inside dimension is 1.5" in depth by 1" in width & height

Considering how small and bright L.E.D.s and bulbs are nowadays, it seems very easy to whip something up that will work using a multi meter to find out the voltage being delivered to a nearby power source that would be tapped into, and then some skill with a soldering gun to make it work. The Rear faux reflector/cap would need a reflector made up since none exists. Since the Rear is a flat piece it should be fairly easy to make something up using Red Reflector Lense material...

Door Lights Functioning Mock Up/ Prototype LOL

So I was bored of MW3, too windy for paintball and no good games on today that I itched to get started on this project for door lights on the Impala. :wink: I did a quick gather of things I had laying around the garage and spent about 2 hours mocking up door lights for the Impala that work.

I gathered the following things that I already had in my garage/tool bag:

- L.E.D. MAG Lite Mini
- 2 AA batteries
- random 16ga? cable/wire (from an old underglow kit)
- duct tape
- wire strippers
- foam cup

You will need to watch this video to know how to dissassemble the LED MAG Lite Mini-

I wanted to try something this way instead of taking my door panel off and splicing wires just yet. How I said, this was just to make a functioning mock up to an idea of what can possibly work/will look good.

Quick summary of what I did:






























:beer:So YES it did work and is super/normal bright with just that 1 LED! After I did this i made a trip to LOWES and gathered prices on material that would be needed to make a proper "kit". I would say roughly $25 +/- aside if you DIY and if you want a proper legit set up. You can be cheap and probably whip something up with $15 +/- a side.

What I found that was avaiable at LOWES and would/am going to use to make a proper " DIY kit" is

- some sort of strong glue that will resist heat if any from the bulb/LED
- electrical pvc piping to make a housing of some sort (electrical)
- a rubber grommet to aid in holding the bulb/led in place (hardware)
- 12V single LED or Halogen bulb that can be found in the (home bulb section)
**I would like to add that they have 12v led/halogen that comes with that cone shape relflective housing and can possible be chopped for easier DIY and more light output? Ill figure that out when i get to it.
- proper gauge wire/cable (electrical)
- heat shrink (electrical)
- solder (electrical)
- electical tape (electrical)
- blue T-Taps to tap into existing power source in the door panel
*** or you can splice into and straight solder which is probably better
- paint, because everything looks better painted one color. :eek:k3:

I will be completing this on my free time and I should have something whipped up by the end of the week with full DIY. :hope:

- I am estimating working time to make/install this kit will be 2 hrs the first time around, you know... to do it right. :dunno:
- I am estimating cost to be between $15-30 a side for a self DIY & thats with already having the tools that are going to be needed for fabrication/installation.

Possible Group Buy" maybe? :eusa_think: Dont know, maybe. I am not a Vendor on here nor am I trying to become one, I am simply a fellow member trying to help out the community. It is possible I will do a Group Buy of some sort to benefit those who dont have the time or skill to go on it themselves. If I did I would not charge much, basically only for my time and material wasted with making no profit in mind. Of course it will be easier to do it in group runs though :beer: Production would be easier having everything out only once in one sit down.:dizzy:

Jk no offense. But sure looks like a benefit for the people looking into this project. You should probably contact GM and submit as an idea for there unexperienced workers and knowledge

Thanks? Still trying to figure out different ways of making a housing for the led. I was even thinking to mill out something using compressed wood similar to that used for subwoofer enclosures. Also was thinking of copying the inside space behind the lense with a skeleton form made of wire-hanger and then follow it up by covering it with a fleece and then laying fiberglass resin to house the LED. Something that will fit nice and tight in the small space behind the Reds lens on the door panel for sure though. I dunno, I'll figure it out soon. I think I'll try different type housings and see what I end up with, something that will be a clean drop-in look. Will try to source solid abs or some type of solid plastic blocks and mill a perfect fit housing out of them. That would be the best way....hmmm ideas keep popping up! Probably create a socket of some sort to shape to house the led/bulb....

Wood would work for so long until it starts to break off. Best bet would be epoxy resin. Feel it up in a tube of some sort and add the Led. But make sure all wires are finalized and soldered.

Or maybe using the fitment of the flashlight you got the led from as a guide
