Hello! I have a 2006 Impala with the 3.5 V6. I currently have the heads off the engine and about to clean off the gunk from the pistons and heads. A mechanic friend told me most engines have to be timed at TDC when reassembling the engine. My question is do you have to time the engine at TDC when putting the engine back together?

The timing is done via the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. If you didn't remove the camshaft you should be able to put the heads back on and start the engine. Probably should use new head bolts as they are torque to yield.
