2004 impala transmission

Impala "slips in 1st and into 2nd" "slips is used loosly" most of the time, if the shift lever is placed to 1, starts to move just fine. at about 20MPH, shifting to 2nd 3rd, or drive, transmission will shift just fine and onto 3 and 4.
anytime the transmission is in any particular gear, it seems to have no issue. just into 1 and into 2. Reverse would be slow to engage when first started, cold in Minnesota.

recently, the transmission would not shift at all, into 1st. This was after driving it about 4 miles. Pushed the car off the roadway and tried several time. would not catch what so ever, even with an engine rev to 3000. I finally just shut the engine off and was goint to get it towed. A friend stopped by and I started the engine and it drove just fine. The following day, I started it again and it drove just fine.1-2-3-4 2nd time, drove just fine 1-2-3-4.
Suspect a shift solenoid?

the 1-2 accumulator piston may have been stuck or shift solenoid..
first things first check fluid level and color.
I'd take it to a trusted transmission shop to have it looked at. Unless you plan on trying to repair it yourself, you're going to need to take it there eventually anyway... Transmission failures seem to be a VERY common issue on these cars - they are just weak transmissions - there really is no other way to put it...

I'd suspect that you are going to need a transmission rebuild (or replacement, whichever you prefer). But who knows, maybe it really is just a simple, inexpensive part replacement... How many miles?
I've got 140k and daily driving an Impala stock trans with nothing but fluid, filters and a shift kit.. I just drove from Vegas to Tuscon and back then a week later LA to Vegas and back. They're not that bad..
Actually, maybe I'm wrong here - I know the 4-speed transmission in the 8th gen Impalas are known to be pretty weak, but maybe thats not the case with the transmissions in the 7th gens? Honestly, I've never owned an Impala with a 4-speed transmission - I'm just going by what others say - people calling it a "glass' transmission, etc...

Is the 4-speed transmission in the 7th gens the same as the 4-speed in the 8th gens?

And of course there are *always* exceptions!
I don't know what's in an 8th gen.. and don't plan on finding out.
I have a 2004 and my tranny started slipping at 84K miles. Glad I got an extended warranty. $2,200 worth of work at a transmission shop. Sorry for the bad news.
Northern MN also, 04 with over 200k,. Only 1 Trany filter & oil change some 25k miles ago.
I drive 102mles - 5*/wk. 90% hwy, but also down & up the steep hills of Duluth,Mn.
Only had 1 time when it was very cold outside and on a cold engine, I lost the trany going up a very-very steep hill in Duluth. I let it roll backwards onto a level street and tried again, went up fine.
Think the fluid was too cold & stiff and it temporary ran out in the trany's reservoir.

The only other thing I notice is sometimes it does not want to shift down to 1st gear after coming to a stop (Again, only when very cold outside (-15^F) and on a cold engine). It will lightly Bang into 1st gear when starting out.

Thinking of switching to Amzoil trany fluid and power flush (Not really a power flush).
They use the trany's own pump to replace the fluid so it get a complete replacement including torque converter (pumps out the old, sucks in the new through the fluid lines going to the radiator). Around $200 to do that.
Did that (F&F) to my 01 Honda CRV which I only drive on deep snow days :-]

P.S. I have a heavy foot so my car's trany & engine get a workout. Holding up very well

These transmissions are weak if you don't take care of them just like every other car.

Gm recommends fluid and filter replacement every 50k miles. I
Recommend every 35-40k miles and a flush at 100k miles.

If your fluid looks dark and you don't know the work history or previous maint on the transmission do NOT flush the Trans. Simply drop the pan and replace filter and fluid.

A Trans go shift kit installed properly will also extend the life of the transmission.

Most failures of these 4t65e tranny's lie at the shift solenoid/s and Trans pressure solenoid.
What you're describing with the take off jerking is sure fire sign of PCS in transmission. I just fixed mine and it's like night and day.

Curious what a "PCS in transmission" is?

Can you be specific?
