Just picked up a used 2004 Impala LS that looks great @ 64k miles.
It appears to have new oil, tires, and is clean all around.

Question - noticed the Dexcool brown gunk in the overflow tank,
and only at the top of the radiator valve.... the coolant & neck were clear.
A local mechanic said the gunk "floats" to the top...

So - after reading tons of threads about Dexcool across the web,
not sure if we should drain, flush, and re-fill with normal stuff ??
What effect - at 64k miles - would it have on the existing gaskets & radiator ?

tnx -

Running a coolant cleaner then flushing the whole system is a good idea. Now about switching to a different type of coolant, here is the concern the Dexcool was origenaly put in. It has additives that should help the system not to corrode or rust which is good, but I do not know about changing to the "green stuff". Some have said to change in every ear if you put the "green" in. There are some antifreeze that are compatable with all coolants including Dexcool. If you find the one that is compatable with all it should work. Do keep it changed at least every two years.
