The manual says you need to remove the trim from the A-pillar, then pop the trim up on the dash to access the sensor.

But this video, for the sister Monte Carlo, shows the sensor being removed by just raising the trim up, without removing it, to access the sensor.

I have removed this sensor before, on a 2004 Grand Prix GT2. It is virtually the same as the Impala (both W-body vehicles).

You must remove the two A-pillar moldings, which pull off with a strong hand. Then, you pry-up the plastic close-out panel that the ambient light sensor is fastened to. NOTE: This panel will be very brittle and easy to break and/or crack. The panel is held to the dash carrier by spring clips. If you start on the left or right side, and slide a plastic putty knife (not metal...) under the panel, you’ll find the first clip and be able to pop it out. Continue moving across the panel. Take your time and be patient.

Once the panel is removed, the light sensor is held to the plastic close-out panel by tabs, which fit into the panel slots. You must turn it one-quarter turn (can’t remember if it is clockwise or counterclockwise) to unfasten it. Then the sensor can be unplugged and replaced by reversing the process.
