I need some advice. i would like to swap rear ends, on my wagon. i want to replace my stock wagon rear, with that of a sedan. my reason for this swap is that i want to use Spohn swaybar. need to know if the pickup points are the same. appreciate all imput. thanks

Howdy, First off I am pretty new to the ranks of the B body sedans and wagons,so use what I say as a guide but not gospel. A
sedan sway bar and a wagon sway bar are 2 inches different in length,
with the wagon being the longer of the two. Logically then, a sedan rear
would be narrower and may not fit under a wagon without modification. I
also would like to fit a sway bar under my wagon, if I choose to do this I
need to have a sedan bar lengthened or go and buy an expensive aftermarket
unit. Anyway what ever you learn please share . ed

Why would you think swapping a sedan bar would be needed to fit the Spohn swaybar in but then not realize the reason that might help is because there is a fairly substantial width difference? That difference also being the same thing that will hinder the swap.

Some people have installed a sedan axle under a wagon. They wanted to be able to use a sedan sway bar and/or factory rear disc brakes.

The spring perches do not line up like they do with a wagon axle. Springs should be compressed in a straight line not slightly offset. It will eventually shorten the life of the springs. The question is when will it fail. The people that have done it have not reported any failures, but I don't think that is a good idea.

The axle bearings in the sedan axle are smaller than those in the wagon axle. This makes the wagon axle flange larger so that the sedan rear disc brake backing plates will not bolt on. Higher mileage sedans often have axle bearing failures that score the axles. This will be accelerated with the extra weight of the wagon. Again, this is not a great idea.

Most guys don't have the stones to admit their failures, look at the guys with expensive built motors that run slow, they swear it was still a great idea and well done.:rolleyes:

I forgot about cutting the sedan rear sway bar. Both people I know that did this had the bar break after a while. (I bought a sedan rear bar long ago and it is still somewhere in my garage in hopes of doing this, but when they both broke I gave up the idea.) You're right; another bad idea.

rear end swap

Thanks To All Who Sent In Replies About The Rear Swap. You're Appreciated. Now! Who Makes A Quality Rear Sway Bar For The B-body Wagons. I Really Like The Spohn Products, But They Don't Do Rear Sway Bars For The Wagon. The Other Thing Is That They Are Located Approx 30 Miles From Me. Again Thanks Holiday Greetings To All And Your Families.

I am sure I dont have this spelled correctly but Hotchkis makes a rear swar bar for a wagon. Let me know how you do,also if you can get a better price for buying two rear bars ,I might be interested. ed

There is a cheap, junk yard, rear sway bar swap for the '91-'96 Caprice/RM wagons!

The Crown Vic Cop Cars, the rear sway bar is almost a 'bolt in' on the wagons! Night-day handling differnce!

Replace the OM CV rubber bushings with urathane.

The wagon and CV rear suspension/frame design are almost identical!

Back in '04, 5, or sometime in there, (too long ago. Old Fart's Disease. CRS Can't Remember S^#t) when I did the CV rear bar swap in my wagon. There seemed to be many complaints of either breaking a sedan bar, by either cutting, welding, stretching,,,,,,. Or pulling bolts through, or breaking the LCA's

The ONLY alternative was $$$$ Hoskis, or however you spell them.

If one is going to do some all out (only) preformance driving,,,,,,. THEN, the MATCHED front/rear $$$$ Hoskis bars/upgraded controll arms/Bilstines/KYB's, are the only way to go.

However,,,,,,, (sigh) NOT everyone has the 'deep pockets' required to do such a suspension upgrade. It was either, break feces, do without, or spend lots of $$$$! NO inbetween!

Back then, I was in a U-pullit yard, helping a buddy pull some stuff off a Crown Vic Cop Car, for a Street Rod project. The CV was on it's side. I kept staring at the rear suspension/frame, because it look similiar to the Caprice. I went over to the Chevy section and found a wagon on it's side, and sure enough the frames looked identical. I went and got a tape measure. It was though the same company made the rear section of the frames/suspension for both the Ford and Chevy!

I found out something else that day. NOT ALL CV's had a rear bar! ONLY the Cop CV's had rear bars.

The design of the CV bar was that, like on EVERY rear bar set up I had seen, EXCEPT for the GM! Bar mounted to the rear end housing, and link bolts mounted to the frame.

Yes! Granted, the CV bar was small diametered compaired to the LCA mounted GM bars.

But, IT WORKED! 20-30 mph FASTER, confortably through the same turns, w/o the rear C'Vic bar!

I took pictures of the mounting process I did, posted 'em over on the SS site, that I found a cheap alternative to the $$$$ Hoskis/LCA problem, set up, that gave the same handling results!

You would have thought I commited a raging sin against God or something, the way I was 'ratted' on, by the tried and true Hoskis (only) method. "NO self respecting person would EVER put a Ford part on a GM,,,,,,," Yadda, yadda, yadda! On and on and on! I was an inbread moron, etc, Geeze! Even one of the Mods gave me hell! I quit. To hell with 'em if they didn't want a better 'mousetrap!'

Then, they had the 'big crash' and the thread/pictures I did/posted, got 'lost'

Then several years later, 'someone' either remembered that post, or like me, discovered that the CV bar would bolt on the wagons, vastly improve the handling, resurrected the thread. Now several are doing the CV rear bar swap! With NO LCA problems!

What blew my mind was, someone said, they went to the Ford DEALER, and bought a NEW, larger diameter, C'Vic Police package rear bar for a measley $60!

There is a book that ADDICO put out a decade or two ago. I don't know if they still have the book or not,,,,,. But it's worth EVERYONES time and effort, to get that book and read it! There is a WEALTH of knowlege of suspension design, and common myths/mistakes/etc. I think, it's called " Handling. What It Is, and How To Get It"

Last time I was in the junkyard, nearly every Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, and Town Car I looked under, had a rear sway bar. They all looked like they were the smaller diameter bars, as well. Even the few P71's I came across, the bars didn't look to be any bigger. Granted, all of these cars were 90-97's, and I didn't have my calipers with me. But from my measurements with a tape measure, they were all the same size.
