I have a 1986 Caprice Classic Wagon with a 305. What temperature should the gauge read? The temperature gauge usually sits a little below 220 degrees (the middle) but will rise to above 220 (ten degrees, maybe). This usually happens after it runs for awhile 60 minutes or more. Is this normal? I just purchased this vehicle 3 months ago and I am slowly addressing it's many minor issues. Thanks.

When was the coolant changed last? Has the thermostat been changed recently? If not, do you know how old it is?

The coolant was tested in 2000, this is what the tag on the radiator says. This car sat more than it was driven, maybe 1K a year.
