OK guys I am new to Chevy but not to car tech. I've got a '58 Biscayne that has a blown-out first gear in the original tranny attached to the original 283 V8. What options do I have for upgrading this little 3-speed manual to something a bit beefier? I would KILL to be able to swap in a late-model 5-speed from an F-body etc. (just lengthen the shifter stalk) but I'd also consider a 4-speed auto if it's heavy-duty. The current tranny has been modified to a floor-shift (whoohoo!) What can I do? I am in CA, This is my baby without her new '56 yellow plates on yet:

The beauty about Chevy is the interchangebility of parts. If you can find a 4 speed Muncie, it would be a good replacement for that tired 3 speed. Of course, there are different Muncies- the Rock Crusher, wide ratio, close ratio, probably getting hard to find a good one though.
