1995 Impala SS History

1995 Chevrolet Impala SS

It is almost an irony of automotive history that the first Super Sport packages for the early '60s Impalas were available for four-door models. Later, the SS designation became associated with sporty two-door coupes and convertibles. Then, in its final revival in the mid-'90s, the Impala SS was exclusively a four-door sedan model.

The Chevy Impala SS four-door sedan returned for its second appearance in '95. It was again a specialty entry in the Chevrolet's Series 1B Caprice Classic lineup. The Impala SS was coded as the L19/BL5 model. This year it had a base price of $22,910 and tipped the scales at 4,036 lbs. That was about $1,000 more and 200 lbs. less than in the previous season.

As in 1994, the Impala SS featured a host of special equipment as part of its standard price. The assortment included five-spoke 17 x 8.5-inch aluminum wheels, 17-inch B.F. Goodrich Comp T/A tires, quick-ratio power steering, air conditioning with CFC-free refrigerant, a unique grille, a rear deck lid spoiler, Impala SS emblems, reshaped rear quarter windows with inserts, four-wheel disc brakes, an anti-lock braking system, a center console, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual air bags, black satin-finished trim, gray cloth upholstery, an electronic tachometer, and a special ride and handling suspension system with DeCarbon shock absorbers. Gray leather upholstery trim was optional.

The Impala SS was powered by the 5.7-liter (350-cid) LT1 Corvette V-8 engine with platinum-tipped spark plugs and a stainless-steel exhaust system, which produced 260 hp. It was linked to a 4L60-E electronic automatic transmission with a floor-mounted gear shifter. Performance was in the same bracket as with the 1994 model. Different sources listed times between 6.5 and 7.1 seconds for the 0-to-60 mph runs. (The 7.1-second figure was the official one from Chevrolet Motor Division). A typical quarter-mile trial was done in 15 seconds at 92 mph.

Several new colors were introduced and added to the original monotone black color scheme in 1995. Black, however, remained the most popular with 9,858 cars being finished in that shade. Dark Cherry was put on 7,134 cars. Another 4,442 Impala SS sedans were done in Dark Gray Green, another new-for-1995 color.
