1969 Impala SS 427 History



1969 Impala SS 427

The Impala SS 427 was merchandised differently in each of the three model years that it was offered: 1967, 1968, and 1969. This high-performance package for the fanciest full-size Chevrolet became a little more distinctive as it aged. In fact, the final version, offered in 1969, was the purest expression of the super-sized Supercar's reason for existing.

When Chevrolet Motor Division introduced its 1969 model, the regular Impala Super Sport was gone. There was not a Super Sport series and you could not get just a Super Sport option package. The only way that a buyer could get his or her hands on a Super Sport was to order the SS 427 option, which included both the big-block V-8 engine and the typical SS trimmings as a buyer-takes-all package. In other words, if you wanted to get a full-sized Chevy with a muscle car image, you had to go all the way!

The Z24 code was again used to identify the option. It could be ordered for three Impalas: The Sport Coupe, at $3033 (with V-8) was the low rung version. The custom coupe model listed for $3,085. Both of these cars were, technically, two-door hardtops, but the custom coupe had a more formal-looking roofline. The window sticker on the convertible was $3,261.

The SS427 option package retailed for $422.35. It included power disc brakes, a special three-speed transmission, special ornamentation, chassis and suspension upgrades, 15-inch wheels, red-stripe tires and the 427-cid V-8.

This year the regular 427 with a single four-barrel carburetor and 10.25:1 compression ratio had a little more muscle. It carried ratings of 390 hp at 5400 rpm and 460 lbs.-ft torque at 3600 rpm. It had a Rochester four-barrel carburetor. There was also a special COPO (Central Office Production Option) version that featured an 11.0:1.
