JT's 2012 Impala LT Mod Thread

Thought it was probably about time I started my own thread for some of the mods I've done and am in the process of doing, instead of just posting this stuff all over the place in other threads....

Wanted to show some pics of the non-fog-light area covers that I received yesterday. These cost me $38 and are actually built pretty well (were heavier than I expected). They are black powdercoated but the face of the "slats" are a mirror-like stainless finish. Haven't actually tried them on the car yet (been too damn cold!), but wanted to show some pics of them before I installed, including the mounts on the back of them. I haven't yet decided if I'm going to install them as-is or if I'm going to plastidip the fronts black (to match the color of my main grilles). Since I still have the chrome border around my main grilles, I may just leave the face of these chrome-colored to match the chrome borders on the grille....

EDIT: Also considering plastidipping them white - that may actually look good too...

Here are the pics:

its about time you make a mod thread considering all the interior mods you done with your impala like the TV headrest.

i think plastidipping the fog covers white would look better than as is.

Yeah, I'm honestly not sure what way to go yet - need to actually hold them up to the car first and see. Would be awesome to get a photoshop of them installed in both white and black (hint, hint, @RYD!) :-)

I guess I could always spray one white and one black and decide from there - but it's a PIA to peel the dip off with the small openings...

i think the grilles the way they are now would look good with the chrome headlights, now that i think about it.

Ok, cool - thanks @RYD - I will do that (pics of them installed as-is).

I will definitely get some pics posted of the other mods - I really need to take some new, current pics - I just wish it wasn't so damn cold (I *hate* cold weather).

Just figured I'd start a new thread since I wanted to show the non-fog-light covers and was getting tired of posting this stuff all over the forum (gotta start somewhere!).

Plus I'm in the middle of cleaning my basement today (fun, fun, let me tell you!). What makes it REALLY fun is that I never really fully cleaned it up since the basement flooded, so I still have some moldy boxes (filled with stuff that I never unpacked since I moved in about 5 years ago!). Nasty stuff...

Just wanted to post a follow-up to some of the information that I posted about the Alpine KTP-445U amp (in another thread). I originally said that it didn't seem to increase the volume level of the warning chimes, but after using the car a little more, I *do* think that it increased the chime (and turn-signal) volume a little. I'm thinking that the gain setting on the amp decides just how much it increases. Since I have the gain set very low, it's not that big of a difference, but if you had to set the gain really high for some reason, I imagine that it could make the chime volume too loud.

Keep in mind that I'm using the speaker-level inputs on the amp. Not sure if the chime volume would be affected if you used line-level inputs instead (anyone happen to know that answer?).

I've always liked the fact that the Rosen and Advent OGM-1 units continued to use the left tweeter for chimes and turn-signal sounds instead of the little stick-on speaker used by "less expensive" plug-and-play head-units (or non-plug-and-play aftermarket head-units), but when using an amp, the little stick-on speaker may not be such a bad thing I guess!

Really not a big deal, but wanted to make sure that I posted the correct info.

I'm curious to hear from others with an amp installed - if so, are your warning chimes and turn signals louder as well? The more that I think about it, it's probably only an issue if you are using the stock head-unit or a "plug-and-play" unit - otherwise, you would need a special adapter to retain the chimes and I think that they use their own speaker for the chimes anyway...

My chimes come from the factory headunit (in the trunk) that's connected to a small speaker I have mounted under the center console. I have to be careful because if that radio is on on the factory headunit, it will come through the little speaker too I just make sure the volume is turned all the way down on the factory unit.

So you normally keep the re-located factory head-unit turned off, I assume? If that's the case, the chimes should still work but you won't hear the radio at all since it's turned off, right? Or does it automatically turn on when you start the car regardless (I though it "remembers" the power state though)?

Well, TBH, I haven't checked it recently. I believe I turned it off the last time. But I remember when I first installed it, I was listening to some music and the song ended, and I could hear a faint radio advertisement, and couldn't figure out where it was coming from, until I realized it was from the factory headunit I turned the volume down and it went away.

IDK, maybe it was a CD I left in there, I don't remember. All I know is there was something else playing softly after the song on the aftermarket headunit ended
