Swamp Cooler Air Conditioning

It's only recently that I learned, in the days before car air conditioners, automobiles once used evaporative coolers to help cool the passenger compartment. Also known as swamp coolers, these devices utitilze the cooling effects of evaporation to make the air a little more comfortable for the passengers in the car. (Each gram of water that evaporates absorbs ~580 calories of heat.)

While I've long been aware of swamp coolers, typically mounted in home windows much the same as window air conditioners, it was only in the past few months that I learned they were once used for automotive applications as well.

I saw the one in the pic at a recent car show. But what I found most interesting about this one is that there's also an AC compressor under the hood I guess the cooler on the window is just for show
