2003 Impala 3.8L jerking after driving for a few hours

The Impala has recently, just in the last week, has started jerking when its left running for a few hours. I drive it about 80 miles or so a week, but if I take a trip out of town and let her idle for longer than 15 minutes she starts shifting hard, jerking when in reverse, and jerking when getting up to speed (tends to smooth out above 40 mph). The transmission fluid is a little thick and a brownish red, but not low. Any way I can fix it before it leaves either me or the wife hoofing it?
