Attention - Password and Security Update

Hello all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

I just updated my password a minute ago - but was never required to do so by the forum.

Ugh, using capitals and symbols in a password and having to change it every year... been using the same password for years and never had a issue.

I'm never going to remember the new password.

Agreed - password requirements are WAY too much.... I don't have such strict password requirements on our business computers at work that contain HIPAA data! Geez...

I also had to do it again, then got a notification about the password change that I couldn't close. Had to open forum in a new tab. So much for a smooth rollout.

"On June 13, 2016, we became aware that February 2016 data stolen from VerticalScope was being made available online."

That's a nice way of saying we knew about it in Feb but weren't going to bother informing the people that use our services until someone leaked the info and we were forced to. Nice company to conduct business with...

So what's the deal? Did the hosting company inform the website owners when this happened or were they kept in the dark to?

I'm a grown man so it didn't bother me much.
I just changed it and made note of it in my password list and moved on.

Such bullshit here. They had ALREADY forced me to reset my password, then change it for me again without any notification? What the fuck AG?

I was on mobile all day because I was out of the house, and couldn't log into the forum on my phone because of the password reset, which again, I had ALREADY been forced to do.

Good luck getting a lot of the forum members who only post a few times a month to remain around here when they'll never know what the hell their password is.

The bother to me is that this Ft. Knox password is completely unnecessary. It does nothing to prevent someone from getting into VerticalScope like they already did. The worst they can do is hack a members account and post under their guise. Whoopdie-doo! So now we've inconvenienced tens-of-thousands of folks for a false sense of security.

I also find it hard to believe the data was stolen 4 months ago and it's just sat on someone's HD all this time and they just found out about it because it's just now being offered for sale on the internet. The biggest inconvenience will be the thousand spam emails per day we're going to be hit with. IOW, trying to secure shit now is already to late. I still want to know how long the host and site owners have known about this.
