The password requirements are on par with other sites on the net (Facebook, LinkedIn, ect). This protects against dictionary / brute force attacks by making them more complex.

This site, and other AG sites, were recently infected with MALWARE for more than a week that redirected iPad users to another web site, declaring the user had won an Amazon gift card.

Why did it take so long to eliminate the MALWARE and why doesn’t this site (and related sites) do more to prevent the MALWARE?

Thank you.

The pop-up/redirects that were showing up on a number of AG forums have been affecting a large number of sites across the Internet, not just one's owned by AG. It's a wide spread issue, so it's not a simple fix, but we have been doing our best by escalating/blocking the individual URLs that were reported while our tech team was also looking for a way to fix the problem.

These redirects tend to sneak in with other (legitimate) ads, so they are hard to detect until they're already in. Removing ads altogether is not an option or solution since that's how the forums make enough money to be maintained. As you can see, it's not a simple problem and doesn't offer a simple solution.

We do know that those redirects have been frustrating for users (trust me, they were no fun for us either), but I do want to say that we have really appreciated everyone's patience as we've been trying to work through it.

Cheers,

Erik

It's surprising that ad sites with this type of malware are not blacklisted almost instantly and prosecuted where possible.

No easy answer. Monetizing sites like this adds an unpleasant, for the site owner, level of responsibility for these types of underhanded attacks.
You are unlikely to lose supporters by being honest.
If you actually post that this has happened, when it does, and that you are working on it rather than hiding it... perhaps some of the Luddites will wake up about using some modicum of security to make life harder for these thieves.

The litigious state of affairs in this country where people try to extract what is not theirs from others via the courts... and win these cases more often than not... has to be taken into account as well. I'm not optimistic about the continued survival of a culture that has allowed this kind of rot to fester at the core of its' legal heart.

My prior comments about low hanging fruit still stand.
